Your Role

You will be a Technical Quality Assurance Leader within the engineering team helping us build high-quality digital products while driving a modern automation-first QA strategy. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to design implement and scale automated testing frameworks across Web API Performance Visual testing as well as our Salesforce Zuora Zephr platforms.

You will play a key role in establishing automation standards improving CI/CD quality gates and enabling faster and more reliable addition to strategy and leadership you will contribute hands-on to automation architecture framework improvements and test reliability ensuring the QA ecosystem remains scalable and efficient across the technology organisation.

Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Lead Engineer QA to help lead our Times Media - Customer Quality Assurance team.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in software quality assurance test automation (including Web API Performance and Visual testing) and team leadership.

You will be responsible for driving the QA strategy ensuring the delivery of high-quality software products and fostering a culture of quality across the engineering organisation.

This role requires a hands-on leader who can balance technical expertise with people management skills particularly in automation frameworks API testing Performance Testing and Visual testing.

You will work closely with the Manager QA and collaborate with global teams with dotted-line reporting responsibilities.

Knowledge of Salesforce Zuora Zephr is a bonus.

Key Responsibilities

1. QA Strategy & Leadership

Accountable for the overall QA and automation strategy across products and platforms.

Ensure automation frameworks are maintainable scalable and integrated into CI/CD pipelines.

Review automation frameworks test design coverage and execution quality.

Promote a shift-left and continuous testing mindset across teams.

Seed and foster an automation-first mindset within development teams encouraging shared ownership of quality.

Guide teams on best practices for testing modern architectures (APIs microservices and data pipelines).

Define and implement strategies to reduce release cycle time through effective use of automation testing within the WordPress ecosystem.

Partner with engineering teams to ensure testability quality gates and release readiness.

2. Team Leadership

Lead mentor and performance-manage QA engineers and automation specialists.

Build strong skill development plans and succession pipelines. Conduct goal setting performance reviews feedback sessions and coaching. Foster a culture of ownership accountability collaboration and continuous improvement.

Support hiring onboarding and team capacity planning in partnership with HR and Delivery teams.

Drive high engagement morale and retention within the QA organisation.

3. Delivery & Stakeholder Collaboration

Work closely with Product Engineering and Delivery teams to align quality goals with business priorities.

Act as the quality owner during sprint planning release planning and go/no-go decisions.

Communicate quality status risks and metrics clearly to leadership and global stakeholders.

Ensure smooth collaboration across the UK India Sofia and other cross-functional teams.

4. Metrics & Continuous Improvement

Define and track quality KPIs such as defect leakage automation coverage cycle time and test effectiveness.

Drive root cause analysis and implement preventive actions for recurring issues.

Continuously refine QA processes to improve speed reliability and predictability.

Ensure compliance with defined quality standards tools and practices. Stay updated with the latest trends and tools in automation.

Qualifications

1. Education & Experience

Bachelors or Masters degree in Computer Science Engineering or a related field.

710 years of experience in Software Quality Assurance with at least 2 years in leadership.

Strong understanding of modern QA practices within Agile/Scrum environments with hands-on experience integrating automated testing into CI/CD pipelines.

Experience driving automation strategy test coverage and quality standards across engineering teams.

2. Technical Skills

Strong proficiency in programming/scripting languages such as JavaScript or TypeScript.

Hands-on experience with Playwright for end-to-end test automation including Web UI testing API testing Visual regression testing and performance validation.

Hands-on experience with WordPress CLI commands.

Experience testing WordPress-based platforms including validation of themes plugins content workflows and CMS-driven web applications. Experience integrating automated tests into CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins CircleCI) to enable continuous testing and fast feedback.

Familiarity with performance testing approaches for web applications and APIs ensuring scalability and reliability of WordPress-driven platforms. Familiarity with Core Web Vitals and ability to identify issues that will affect Rankings.

Accessibility (A11y) Testing: Deep familiarity with accessibility standards (e.g. WCAG) and hands-on experience using tools (e.g. Axe Lighthouse) and screen readers to ensure product compliance.

Advanced Performance Tooling: Experience with enterprise-grade load and performance testing tools beyond the basic validation mentioned such as JMeter LoadRunner.

Familiarity with AI tools to reduce exploratory and automation testing efforts. Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS or GCP and containerized environments using Docker and Kubernetes.

Strong understanding of version control systems (Git) and issue tracking/management tools such as Jira.

Hands-on experience with application monitoring and observability tools such as New Relic for performance monitoring error tracking and production issue analysis.

3. Soft Skills

Excellent leadership communication and interpersonal skills. Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.

Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
