Job Summary

Position Title: Assistant Superintendent (Elementary Middle or High)

Department: Instructional Services Division

Reports To: Superintendent

FLSA Status: Exempt

SUMMARY:

Administers and supervises the total educational program within his/her assigned schools. Conducts the development and supervision of instructional programs school operations and school-based support.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides direct supervision and oversight of principals in assigned schools.
  • Implements the policies of the Board of Education and appropriate administrative regulations at the assigned schools.
  • Serves as the School Districts official representative and liaison person in matters related to the designated Area Advisory Council. Meets regularly with the designated Area Advisory Council and works cooperatively with the Council in appropriate matters.
  • By level leads and supervises the instructional and curriculum programs utilizing District-wide services as determined through cooperative planning as appropriate.
  • Participates in the decision-making process at the District level and is involved in District-wide planning relative to facilities budget instructional programs and personnel as a member of the Instructional Services Leadership Team.
  • Supports principals in the assigned schools with the implementation of the decisions and plans which result from District-level deliberations.
  • Develops and conducts professional learning for effective school leadership.
  • Oversees and assists with the development of strategic plans for assigned schools.
  • Participates in policy study policy development and revision and involves staff in the same.
  • Interprets the Districts educational policies and programs to the faculties students and to the general public and conveys to the Superintendent concerns of these groups.
  • Participates in the Districts public relations program to keep the public informed of the activities needs and successes of assigned schools and responds to parent and community concerns.
  • Performs additional duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Masters degree in school administration or appropriate administrative certification. Successful progressive experience in school administration or supervision and classroom teaching experience.

Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

CERTIFICATES LICENSES REGISTRATIONS:

Valid South Carolina Teaching License in one of the following areas:

Elementary Principal (Tier I Tier II)

Secondary Principal (Tier 2)

Secondary Supervisor

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Principals and all other employees of the School District in assigned schools and departmental personnel. Carries supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organizations policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing hiring and training employees; planning assigning and directing work; evaluating performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; and addressing complaints and resolving problems.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals financial reports and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from community regulatory agencies or members of staff.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference and in the display and interpretation of assessment data. Ability to apply basic concepts of statistical analysis fractions percentages ratios and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to interpret and carry out instructions furnished in written oral diagram or schedule form. Ability to analyze information and use logic to address work related issues and problems. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to quickly assess employee departmental and administrative needs and provide timely feedback.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in specific field. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students parents and community. Ability to speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication. Ability to organize and implement a flexible work schedule in order to meet reporting deadlines. Ability to self-monitor and manage multiple tasks while working individually and with members of a group. Ability to submit all requested reports and documentation in a timely manner and in accordance to scheduled deadlines. The position requires meeting deadlines and interacting with teachers administrators parents and community members.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

12 months

Level 135 Pay Scale

The terms of employment detailed in this job description are based on full time employment during an entire school calendar year. Conditions of employment are adjusted for part time employees or individuals who are hired for less than an entire school year.

EVALUATION:

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually according to Board Policy.
