We have a rare opportunity for a Lab Administration Research Technician to join the King Lab at the University of California Berkeley. The King lab seeks to understand the genetic genomic and cellular foundations of animal origins. To do this King lab members study the closest living relatives of animals the choanoflagellates. Genes shared by choanoflagellates and animals including signaling and adhesion gene homologs were likely present in their last common ancestor and may shed light on the transition to multicellularity. You will provide administrative and technical support to the Investigator and laboratory staff in the King Lab at UC Berkeley which studies the origins of animal multicellularity. This is a one-year position (with the possibility of extension) that is designed as a bridge to graduate school or other advanced opportunities. Duties include both hands-on research support and day-to-day lab operations and administration.

What youll do:
Research support
Assist scientists with cell culture (sterile technique) microscopy flow cytometry (FACS) and standard molecular biology procedures (PCR cloning etc.).
Help maintain choanoflagellate cell lines and prepare media and stock solutions.
Learn new experimental techniques and contribute to active research projects.
Participate in lab meetings journal clubs and planning sessions.
Lab operations and administration
Maintain inventories of consumables and reagents including antibody plasmid and cryogenic dewar records.
Order and receive supplies and equipment; oversee service contracts and asset records.
Coordinate shipments of laboratory strains and reagents to collaborators and outside scientists.
Act as liaison between the lab and HHMI and UC Berkeley administrative offices (procurement MTAs staff transitions).
Coordinate with safety offices to ensure regulatory compliance; manage amendments and renewals for lab permits and protocols.
Organize lab events and coordinate arrangements for visitors.
Process and track reimbursements for the Investigator lab members and visiting scientists.
Oversee multi-lab equipment-sharing and ensure all users are properly trained.
What you bring
Bachelors degree in biology life sciences or a related field. An advanced degree is a plus.
One or more years of related laboratory and administrative support experience.
Familiarity with standard laboratory techniques including sterile technique and basic molecular biology (e.g. PCR).
Strong organizational and time management skills with attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple competing deadlines.
Ability to work collaboratively and inclusively with a diverse research community.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Ability to learn new software applications and laboratory techniques.
Ability to keep accurate and thorough records of work performed.
Self-motivation and a growth mindset: you actively seek out new skills and take ownership of your work.
Physical Requirements
Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet). Work may involve possible exposure to malodorous vapors low dose radiation contamination by toxic chemicals and acids and presence of carcinogenic substances.

Compensation Range
$23.60 (minimum) - $29.52 (midpoint) - $38.37 (maximum)Pay Type:
HourlyHHMIs salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. HHMI considers a candidates education previous experiences knowledge skills and abilities as well as internal consistency when making job offers. Typically a new hire for this position in this location is compensated between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range.
