Job Summary

Description

Under general supervision of licensed physicians performs and/or assists in performing ultrasound examinations in accordance with established departmental policies and procedures. Sets up adjusts and operates sonography equipment. Responds to patients needs as required. Maintains cleanliness of equipment and general working area stocking clinical supplies. Ensures proper operation of sonographic equipment. Provides care to patients of all ages in the form of diagnostic testing. Registered Ultrasound Technologist: registry with American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) or similar group.



Responsibilities

1. Under supervision of physicians prepares patients and examination areas in accordance with departmental policies and procedures. Sets up cleans and adjusts sonography equipment. Observes safety precautions both for equipment maintenance and patient well-being. Communicates with the patient their representative and staff. Explains the exam and instructions to the patient and other health care providers answering questions that are unrelated to specific diagnostic treatment and/or prognosis

2. Operates and adjusts equipment observing safety guidelines. Responds to patients needs during testing. May perform specialized diagnostic examinations as permitted by experience or registry. Develops and/or modifies a procedure plan from health status and medical history for appropriate considerations. Uses independent professional judgment to adopt the procedure plan to optimize exam results. Performs exams under general or direct physician supervision as defined by the procedure adjusting scanning technique to optimize image qualify and spectral waveform characteristics

3. Analyzes sonographic findings so comprehensive exams sufficient for a physician to direct patient management and render a diagnosis can be obtained. Perform measurements and calculations according to laboratory and ACR protocols and guidelines. Minimize patient exposure to acoustic energy without compromising exam quality or completeness.

4. Notifies appropriate health care provider when immediate medical attention is needed. Evaluates patients physical and mental status prior to discharge from the ultrasound department. Records diagnostic images and data for use by the interpreting physician in rendering a diagnosis and for archival purposes. Provides an oral summary of preliminary findings to the radiologist. Ensures adequate supplies are available for use.

5. Ensures good working order of equipment. Troubleshoots routine equipment problems or seeks technical assistance for equipment malfunctions keeping supervisor(s) appropriately informed.

6. Provides related support functions as required including scheduling examinations answering telephones for area and recording messages. Maintains clean work area and maintains full stock of applicable clinical other related duties as assigned or required as professional technologist.



Qualifications

Prior work experience of six months is desired in order to gain familiarity on-the-job with administration of ultrasound testing. Should be familiar with sonographic equipment such as ATL Acuson and Diasonics. New ultrasound technologists require a period of 30 days in order to orient themselves to techniques and work area. Registered Ultrasound Technologist: registry with American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers or equivalent certifying organization is a preferred credential for this position. 3. Good analytical skills necessary for handling of ultrasound patients during administration of diagnostic testing. Must be able to appropriately assess the correct action to take during testing while being cognizant of patient well-being. 4. Good interpersonal manner important during delivery of patient care in order to ensure harmonious provision of ultrasound examinations and testing. 5. Work requires manual dexterity for use of sonographic equipment and instruments. Light lifting of clinical supplies may be required. Adequate physical strength required for positioning of patient and equipment during examinations.
