Job Description:

This is a key role supporting two of Sun Lifes critical global corporate teams: Digital Business and Technology Solutions and Corporate Strategy and Enablement. Reporting to the VP Corporate Communications the AVP Corporate Communications will provide strategic communications counsel and support to the business.

This results-oriented communications leader will oversee and deliver creative internal and external communication strategies and programs that engage employees protect and enhance Sun Lifes brand and align to strategic business priorities. As a leader in the Corporate Communications team this role plays a critical role coaching and developing our high-performing team members and will bring thinking to help advance the function bringing new innovative and leading-edge approaches.

Please note this is a 1-year temporary position requiring regular presence at our Toronto One York office

What will you do

  • Advise senior leaders on strategic communications ensuring alignment between Digital Business and Technology Solutions (DBTS) Corporate Strategy and Enablement and other corporate functions.
  • Support the engagement and thought leadership efforts of senior leadership including identifying opportunities for media and public events that highlight DBTS and Corporate Strategy successes.
  • Shape and communicate key business priorities focusing on Sun Lifes digital technology and innovation strategies and global client outcomes.
  • Lead internal communications for strategic initiatives and change management programs driven by DBTS and Corporate Strategy ensuring clear and effective messaging.
  • Partner with business leaders on change communications to support digital technology and strategy enablement objectives.
  • Protect and build Sun Lifes reputation through proactive public relations issues management and monitoring cyber and industry trends.
  • Serve as spokesperson when needed representing Sun Lifes direction in digital technology and corporate areas.
  • Oversee the annual corporate communications strategy and planning cycle aligning efforts across all corporate functions.
  • Manage communications measurement and reporting providing insights on their impact and value.
  • Guide team learning and development to enhance communication capabilities supporting DBTS and Corporate Strategy needs.
  • Lead and develop the communications team encouraging innovation collaboration and ongoing improvement.
  • Build strong partnerships across the enterprise to effectively share Sun Lifes strategies and culture with stakeholders.
  • Drive best practices in media relations and issues management ensuring consistent processes and knowledge sharing firm-wide.
  • Improve internal and external communications channels to reflect and support strategic integration and value creation.

  • Can develop a corporate narrative for a publicly traded company
  • Consistently elevates and prioritizes to deliver senior-level communications counsel to senior executives
  • Possesses business acumen and great communications judgement to understand Sun Lifes ecosystem - including the ability to track and synthesize stakeholder perception client employee government/regulator news developments
  • Delivers strategies and recommendations that enhance and protect the Sun Life brand
  • Models behaviour consistent with Sun Lifes leadership profile and risk appetite
  • Minimum 12-15 years in Corporate Communications a proven balance of external and internal
  • University Degree and post secondary in journalism or public relations

Assets:

  • Global/International financial services experience
  • Experience supporting technology communications
  • Knowledge of AI and LLMs as it relates to Corporate Communications
  • Direct media relations experience and relationships

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other addition to Base Pay eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
