Job Summary
The Biocontainment Facilities Core Research Associate II is responsible for the daily operations and maintenance of the biocontainment laboratories: the Emerging Pathogens Facility (EPF) (BSL-3 Enhanced) and the Conventional Biocontainment Laboratory (CBF) (BSL-3). The biocontainment facilities serve as a shared resource to support and promote safe work practices and regulatory compliance for the use ofSelect Agents and toxins BSL-3agents animals and arthropod vectors. Under the supervision of the Director Biocontainment Facilities this individual will implement and continually evaluate a facility maintenance program and ensure that research activities involving biological agents including biological select agents and toxins comply with institutional policies and city state and federal regulations.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for the day-to-day management and maintenance of the biocontainment facilities including the enhanced conventional and arthropod biocontainment facilities.
- Serves as a primary point of contact for the biocontainment facility emergencies and alarms including coordination with the Responsible Official on emergency responses with appropriate departments first responders and facility occupants.
- Coordinates the facility maintenance program including identifying investigating and resolving facility problems and conflicts; oversees appropriate compliance maintenance and certification of technical equipment and facility infrastructure; oversees annual verification of the facilities; and oversees pest management issues.
- Assists with the development and modification of standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure compliance with applicable regulations policies and procedures. Conducts training of new users on SOPs.
- Assists with providing training program for new users and ongoing refresher training as needed or mandated.
- Serves as a liaison to the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) Center for Comparative Medicine and Surgery (CCMS) and Environmental Health and Safety (EnvH&S).
- Coordinates and participates in biocontainment facility inspections with the IBC IACUC and EnvH&S.
- Participates in regulatory inspections by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
- Provides oversight for all animal care and use within the BSL-3 facility according to CCMS procedures and approved IACUC protocols.
- Maintains a regular presence in the facility to monitor research activities and provide research-specific training.
- Maintains familiarity with the scope of research and experimental procedures of each individual research group.
- Maintains the confidentiality of all personal and research information.
Qualifications
- Bachelors
- 3 years related experience (OR Masters 1 year experience in related field)
Preferred Skills
- Bachelors degree in a science (Biology Microbiology Zoology) or related discipline (e.g. physical biological or health sciences occupational health and safety environmental health etc.).
- Three or more years of experience in a laboratory setting and familiarity with biosafety biocontainment concepts research procedures and animal research.
- Experience working in biocontainment environments and procedures.
- Ability to conduct work in high-containment environments including with respiratory protection.
