Job Summary

Position Function:

Manages plans supervises schedules and assigns the work of electricians; coordinates the activities of the electrical staff. Services and maintains the high voltage electrical distribution system for the University.

Salary Grade:17

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Estimates plans supervises and coordinates work projects by assigning crews or electricians to specific jobs.
2. Gives input regarding the creation of a comprehensive preventative maintenance schedule.
3. Supervises schedules and assigns the work of the electricians and outside contractors; Manages their work to assure proper staffing and quality standards.
4. Manages departmental time which includes overtime stand by and call back work for electrical employees.
5. Inspects jobs equipment and tools to assure compliance with codes guidelines University standards and safety rules.
6. Troubleshoot and program all traffic signal systems and lighting.
7. Interviews recommends for employment trains evaluates and disciplines the electrical crew.
8. Verifies and approves requisitions; and orders controls and accounts for supplies and equipment to maintain the inventory system.
9. Inspects plans prints sketches and specifications for all jobs and provides technical assistance.
10. Responds to questions complaints and needs of all levels of university employees students and the public to provide technical and trade information and assistance.
11. Audits and oversees vendor bills and charges; ensures that labor and materials are charged to proper accounts.
12. Initiates and prepares special periodic fiscal time study and labor reports; and maintains records.
13. Interact with department heads and other university management and other skilled crafts supervisors to review discuss and coordinate work.
14. Meet regularly with Director of Fiscal Affairs for Campus Services regarding fiscal and performance reports.
15. This position has responsibility for the health and/or safety of others. Responsibilities include overseeing the safe use of equipment and materials and maintaining safety standards for the support staff when working in hazardous or dangerous conditions.
16. Participates in the short-and long-range development of employees. Recommends continuing education objectives and goals within the shop.
17. Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.

Experience: 10 years in commercial industrial or residential electrical practices with demonstrated supervisory skills.

Substitutions: Any equivalent combination of related experience and/or education approved by the Department of Human Resources Management.

Preferred Qualifications:

Certification or Licensure:
Valid Class A Commercial Drivers License or the ability to acquire one.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

1. Knowledge of methods materials tools equipment occupational hazards and safety
precautions of the trade.
2. Thorough knowledge of applicable electrical codes rules and regulations (local state and national).
3. Skill in reading and interpreting blue prints.
4. Demonstrated supervisory skills.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Regularly involves lifting bending or other physical exertion. Often exposed to one or more elements such as heat cold noise dust dirt chemicals etc.

Frequent-Externally imposed deadlines; set and revised beyond ones control; interruptions influence priorities; difficult to anticipate nature or volume of work with certainty beyond a few days; travel or irregular hours often anticipated; meeting of deadlines and coordination of unrelated activities are key to position; may involve conflict-resolution or similar interactions involving emotional issues or stress on a regular basis.

Job frequently requires standing walking reaching climbing or balancing talking hearing handling objects with hands and lifting up to 50 pounds.

Job occasionally requires sitting stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling and lifting more than 100 pounds.
