The Administration for Childrens Services (ACS) protects and promotes the safety and well-being of children and families through child welfare and juvenile justice services and community supports. ACS manages community-based supports and foster care services and provides subsidized childcare vouchers. ACS child protection staff respond to allegations of child juvenile justice ACS oversees detention placement and programs for youth in the community.
ACS Office of the General Counsel (OGC) provides legal representation counsel and advice to the ACS Commissioner and divisional leaders. OGC identifies areas of legal vulnerability and coordinates with divisions to ensure compliance with court orders consent decrees and other legal and regulatory mandates. OGC also works closely with the NYC Law Department to minimize risk avoid litigation and defend ACS in class action and individual lawsuits.
Within OGC the Business Law Unit (BLU) is responsible for drafting reviewing revising and interpreting contracts and solicitations. BLU provides legal counsel for various legal issues that arise when ACS procures goods and services such as confidentiality intellectual property insurance business corporation municipality outsourcing and indemnity obligations. BLU also serves as a liaison to the NYC Law Department in the contract approval process and commercial real estate disputes. Other BLU duties include providing guidance on corrective action plans vendor protest responses and legal questions arising out of signed agreements. OGC is seeking 2 highly motivated and detail-oriented Business Law Interns interested in transactional law and intellectual property rights to join our team.
As a Business Law Intern you will support day-to-day operations within our Business Law Unit (BLU) and work alongside attorneys responsible for providing legal counsel for issues that arise when ACS procures goods and services. This internship offers an excellent opportunity for a law student(s) to gain first-hand experience in addressing issues in transactional practice for a large government organization including contract drafting and negotiation real estate matters and ownership licensing and transfer and protection of intellectual property rights. Additionally as a member of the 2026 ACS Summer Internship Program cohort you will participate in an enrichment program designed to fully engage students into the ACS and NYC government experience. Internship programming includes professional development workshops lunch and learns speaker events NYC government tours and networking opportunities.
Key Responsibilities will include assisting attorneys:
- Handle a wide variety of commercial agreements and other transactional documents (e.g.: purchase of consulting services direct services to families and technology services including end-user license agreements software as a service agreements service level agreements non-disclosure agreements and associated transactional work such as advising staff on contract management and compliance matters)
- Perform legal research and writing in the areas of transactional and intellectual property law
- Conduct due diligence related to potential litigation
- Observe and/or participate in meetings and calls with clients and outside parties
Learning Outcomes:
- Learn how to provide legal counsel for various issues that may arise when procuring goods and services for a government organization
- Gain hands-on experience in drafting reviewing revising and interpreting contracts and solicitations
- Strengthen abilities to coordinate and execute organizational tasks in a professional setting
