Position Summary:
The Office of Technology Transfer (OTT) at Rice University supports the commercialization of university research by managing intellectual property pursuing patents and facilitating partnerships with industry. OTT helps turn innovations into real-world products while advancing Rices research impact.
The Industrial Contracts Specialist I under the supervision of the Assistant Director for Contracts will serve in the Office of Technology Transfer by assisting in drafting negotiating and administering research-related agreements with external partners including but not limited to material transfer agreements non-disclosure agreements and data use agreements. This role supports the commercialization of Rice University research by ensuring agreements comply with university and federal policies facilitating collaboration with faculty staff and external partners and helping advance the universitys research impact through effective contract administration.

The ideal candidate is an organized detail-oriented professional with some experience in research administration or intellectual property management. They understand contractual issues in a university research environment can assist in drafting and managing material transfer agreements and communicate clearly with internal and external stakeholders. The candidate works independently while collaborating effectively demonstrates attention to detail and can manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced client-focused environment.
Workplace Requirements:
This position is offered as a hybrid role combining both in-office and remote work to provide flexibility and support Rice policy 440 work arrangements may be subject to change.
Hiring Salary: $63100 - $80400
*Exempt (salaried) positions underFLSA are not eligible for overtime.
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelors degree
In lieu of the education requirement additional related experience above and beyond what is required on an equivalent year-for-year basis may be substituted

Ability to draft negotiate and conclude industry research agreements under the supervision of management
Understanding of the university research environment and policies

Preferences:
Experience working in a university setting or negotiating research-related agreements with universities
Essential Functions:
Negotiates and finalizes non-disclosure and material transfer agreements; drafts language to comply with university federal and other regulatory policies requirements and conditions
Under supervision of management negotiates and finalizes other research-related agreements as assigned
Identifies contractual and policy issues such as research integrity policies conflicts of interest export control and accounting; raises issues to appropriate university officials and provides follow-through until resolved
Interprets and explains contract terms and conditions to students faculty and staff
Collects and documents necessary internal approvals before contract execution e.g. intellectual property assignments required internal NDAs and acknowledgment letters
Facilitates interactions with other university research administration offices
Assists management and other Industrial Contracts Specialists in revising standard agreements to reflect changes in university policies federal regulations and laws
Participates in developing ideas for more effective client service
Assists in development and training as needed
Performs all other duties as assigned
