Overview
We are seeking a Whitespace Engineer to support the planning design and operational management of whitespace areas within a mission-critical data center environment.
This role is responsible for optimizing rack space power and cooling capacity to support IT deployments while ensuring alignment with operational safety and compliance standards. The Whitespace Engineer partners closely with IT facilities and operations teams to manage infrastructure layouts execute deployments and drive capacity planning initiatives across the data center.
The ideal candidate brings hands-on experience in data center environments strong understanding of whitespace design and capacity management and the ability to collaborate across multiple teams in a fast-paced high-availability setting.
Key Responsibilities
Design & Planning
Develop and maintain whitespace layouts for server racks network equipment and supporting infrastructure
Conduct capacity planning across space power and cooling to optimize data center utilization
Create rack elevations cabling plans and equipment placement diagrams using CAD and/or DCIM tools
Partner with IT deployment teams to plan installations migrations and infrastructure changes
Operations & Execution
Oversee physical installation of IT equipment ensuring adherence to standards for airflow cable management and load balancing
Perform regular audits of whitespace areas to verify asset placement labeling and alignment with design documentation
Manage hot aisle and cold aisle containment strategies to optimize thermal performance
Coordinate with facilities teams to align power distribution and cooling infrastructure with IT load requirements
Capacity & Efficiency Management
Track whitespace utilization metrics and forecast future capacity needs
Provide recommendations to optimize rack density cable routing and airflow management
Support initiatives to improve energy efficiency (PUE) and reduce operational costs
Compliance & Documentation
Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation within DCIM and asset tracking systems
Ensure adherence to safety security and environmental policies within whitespace environments
Support internal and external audits related to infrastructure layout capacity and compliance
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work closely with Break/Fix Deployment and Asset Lifecycle Management (ALM) teams to coordinate hardware lifecycle activities
Partner with engineering and design teams on new data center builds and expansion projects
Contribute to the development of standards and best practices for whitespace design layout and operations
Required Experience
Experience working in data center operations infrastructure engineering or similar mission-critical environments
Strong understanding of whitespace design rack layouts and capacity planning across space power and cooling
Experience with DCIM tools CAD or similar infrastructure planning platforms
Knowledge of airflow management hot aisle and cold aisle containment and thermal optimization strategies
Familiarity with asset tracking documentation and inventory management systems
Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
Effective communication skills with the ability to collaborate across engineering operations and IT teams
Preferred Experience
Experience supporting hyperscale or high-density data center environments
Familiarity with PUE optimization and energy efficiency initiatives
Exposure to commissioning deployments or data center expansion projects
