Job Description
The University of Alabama at Birmingham ( UAB ) Heersink School of Medicine Department of Surgery is recruiting a PhD scientist or surgeon-scientist with a strong track record in cardiovascular health services and outcomes research to serve in a joint appointment supporting the Division of Vascular Surgery & Endovascular Therapy and the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery. This position is designed to enhance the research mission mentorship infrastructure and extramural funding portfolio of both divisions through leadership in cardiovascular outcomes science registry-based research clinical trials methodology and health services investigation. The successful candidate will provide strategic leadership in cardiovascular outcomes and comparative effectiveness research registry-based and real-world evidence generation clinical trial design and statistical methodology implementation science and quality improvement and grant development and multi-center collaborative research. A substantial portion of the candidates effort will be dedicated to independent and collaborative research leadership grant writing and mentorship of faculty residents fellows and trainees across both divisions. Protected research effort and infrastructure support will be provided commensurate with experience and funding. The remaining effort may include teaching program development and service activities aligned with the candidates expertise and career goals. The Divisions of Vascular Surgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery at UAB offer highly collaborative clinically integrated environments with strong institutional support for outcomes research clinical trials and registry science. The successful candidate will play a central role in advancing the cardiovascular research enterprise across both divisions. Key responsibilities include: Lead independent cardiovascular outcomes and health services research programs. Maintain a strong record of extramural funding particularly NIH support. Collaborate with vascular surgery cardiothoracic surgery cardiology biostatistics and population health investigators. Mentor surgical faculty trainees and junior investigators in research design analysis and manuscript preparation. Support division-wide and departmental research strategy and infrastructure. Contribute to institutional research initiatives registries and clinical trials.
