Interested in enzymatic bioelectrochemistry If yes we look forward to reading your application to our PhD Stipend.
At the Faculty of Engineering and Science Department of Chemistry and Bioscience a Ph.D. stipend is available within the general study program. The Ph.D. stipend is for 3 years.
The workplace is at the Department of Chemistry and Bioscience in Aalborg where you will become part of the Electrochemistry Research Group
Your work tasks
The focus of the PhD project is to obtain fundamental understanding of the coupling between surfaces of nanomaterials and enzymatic bioelectrochemistry a process utilizing electrochemistry to drive redox reactions catalyzed by enzymes. This technology has a large potential ranging from health (biosensors biofuel cells) to power-to-X (biosynthesis) related applications. During the project the successful candidate will be expected to carry out nanomaterials-based electrode fabrication synthesis of redox active polymer enzyme immobilization electrochemical characterization bioelectrochemistry as well as characterization of surfaces using a large range of techniques. The strong focuses of this PhD project are bioelectrochemical regeneration of NADH cofactor for reductive biocatalysis and nitrogenase bioelectrochemistry. It will generate synergy with ongoing externally funded projects in the group. The project will generate new knowledge about how efficient bioelectrosynthesis can become a feasible solution in real-world practice.
In addition to research activities the PhD candidate will contribute to teaching and supervision at Aalborg University. Teaching activities mainly include supervision of student projects.
Your competencies
Applicants should have a strong interest in working in an interdisciplinary research environment and is motivated to collaborate with researchers from different fields especially polymer chemistry and biocatalysis. We expect applicants to show good collaboration skills team spirit and the ability to work independently.
We expect applicants to hold a Masters degree in chemistry chemical engineering electrochemistry materials science biochemistry or a closely related field. Experience with nanomaterials bioelectrochemistry electrochemistry photochemistry analytical chemistry and/or spectroscopy will be considered an advantage.
Strong communication skills in English both written and spoken are required as the PhD project will be conducted in an international research environment. Danish language skills are not a requirement.
Qualification requirements
PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Masters degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1124 of September 19 2025 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time. As part of the PhD study you are among other things required to complete PhD courses corresponding to 30 ECTS gain experience with teaching or other forms of knowledge dissemination and complete an external research stay outside of Aalborg University preferably 3-6 months at a foreign research institution.
