Program Overview:

In fragile and conflict-affected settings (FCAS) school meals programmes (SMP) play a critical role in supporting vulnerable childrens food security nutrition and education. Beyond these core functions there is growing interest in their potential to promote peace and social cohesion through conflict-sensitive programming. Building on an emerging evidence base WFP has begun to explore this potential more 2023 WFP partnered with the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) to produce a framing paper (The importance of school meals programmes in fragile and conflict affected settings: framing the prospects for contribution to peace and social cohesion) launched in 2025 that situates school meals within a conflict sensitive approach. The paper reviews existing evidence on how SMPs can strengthen social cohesion and contributions to peace outlines pathways through which SMPs could contribute to these outcomes identifies knowledge gaps and establishes a foundation for future 2025 WFP and IDS advanced this work through country insight reports (forthcoming) on Somalia and Mali. Both reports examine the relevance of selected pathways of change for contributing to peace and identify practical entry points for enhancing social cohesion through SMPs. Based on the reports recommendations it will be key to integrate conflict-sensitive approaches into Somalia and Malis SMPs ensuring programmes contribute to peace and social cohesion grounded in a conflict sensitive approach.

Envisioned Activity:

2026 will be a pivotal year for advancing the pilot phase of WFPs work on school meals social cohesion and peacebuilding. Building on the country insight reports for Somalia and Mali WFP will begin integrating social cohesion considerations more systematically across school meals programmes in both countries while exploring opportunities to expand this work to additional contexts. This includes the application of a newly released cross cutting indicator on social cohesion the potential development of new country insight reports and analyses and the strengthening of Country Offices (CO) capacities to apply conflict sensitive approaches to SMPs. The intern will support this effort by contributing to the refinement of the Mali and Somalia insight reports assisting in the development of an online training tool on conflict sensitive school meals accessible to all COs and supporting the organization of high level global events where WFP will present its work on SMPs social cohesion and
peacebuilding. The intern will work closely with the SMP team and relevant cross functional units to ensure that tools guidance and learning products are user friendly evidence based and aligned with WFPs broader peace and conflict sensitivity agenda.

Envisioned Objectives:

  • Support the finalization of the Mali and Somalia country insight reports including reviewing content and ensuring accuracy coherence and alignment with WFPs conflictsensitivity framework;

  • Contribute to the design and development of an online training tool on conflictsensitive school meals programming social cohesion and peacebuilding to be made accessible to all WFP COs;

  • Support knowledgesharing efforts including the dissemination of guidance tools webinars and learning materials to strengthen country office capacities globally.

  • Assist in the preparation and coordination of highlevel meetings workshops and global conferences where WFP will present its work on school meals social cohesion and
    peacebuilding;

Knowledge and skills:

  • Ability to interpret basic baseline or monitoring data and synthesize findings would be an asset;

  • Technical skills: Strong analytical and writing skills;

  • Ability to review and structure complex information;

  • Familiarity with programme design;

  • Familiarity with peace/social cohesion/conflict sensitivity concepts;

  • Familiarity with food security/nutrition/education development/humanitarian interventions;

  • Other: The role requires someone who is detail oriented and passionate about producing high quality accessible written outputs. Critical thinking intellectual curiosity and the ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural environment are essential. Although the position is based at HQ the intern should be motivated by the opportunity to understand how global level coordination functions within WFP while remaining connected to the realities and perspectives of COs in the field.

Type of Assignment:

The selected candidate will receive IT equipment and training material; however financial compensation and medical coverage are not provided by WFP. Applicants may seek alternative funding opportunities such as university grants or external scholarships to support their assignment.
