The Department of Conservation and Recreation seeks applicants for a Contracted Student Interns - Plans Library Intern (Unpaid Internship) for 2026 Summer Semester to perform the duties listed below.

Position Information:

Contracted Student Intern: GIS Intern

Location: 10 Park Plaza Boston MA

Start/End Date: 6/1/2026 - 8/14/2026

Salary Rate: $0.00 (UNPAID Student Internship)

Weekly Hours: 37.5 hours

Number of Openings: 1 position

This internship is unpaid and designed to support students or recent graduates seeking practical experience in the field. Interns may be eligible to earn academic credit through their college or university.

General Statement of Duties and Responsibilities:

The Office of GIS Services Intern will support the Department of Conservation and Recreations GIS office in in creating and improving online mapping solutions and bringing items into compliance with new federal Accessibility guidelines. Other miscellaneous tasks could include developing data layers and working with other DCR staff to brainstorm and troubleshoot. The intern will gain hands-on experience in working with data ArcGIS online Federal accessibility protocols and workflow management. This role offers a valuable chance to learn how GIS is applied to solve problems to work on meeting the needs of users and the new future of digital accessibility. There will be a lot of self-paced learning though training and support will be provided as needed.

Detailed Statement of Duties and Responsibilities:

The Intern will support the Office of GIS Services through the following core responsibilities:

  • Working with items in ArcGIS Online: Work with online data layers web maps forms and web applications to customize them for the users needs and meet new Federal Accessibility guidelines.

  • New Federal ADA Title II law: Learn about and implement changes to make all digital items including GIS items compliant with new legal standards.

  • Workflow management: Examine current workflow in one or more projects and offer ideas to improve efficiency.

  • Data development: As and when needed update existing data and learn about data development.

  • Field Operations: There may be a chance to participate in some field data collection through site

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

Technical Proficiency

  • GIS Expertise: Experience with ESRI products specifically ArcGIS Online including the ability to update existing GIS data layers and create spatial products.

  • Cartographic Literacy: Demonstrated ability to read interpret and analyze various maps land surveys and engineering plans.

  • Data Management: Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite (Excel Word Outlook) and experience with digital database entry or record modernization. Domain Knowledge.

  • Real Estate Foundations: An understanding of real estate transactions property records and the legal documentation associated with land acquisition.

Professional Attributes

  • Organizational Skills: The ability to transition physical archives (paper records and plans) into organized accessible digital and physical filing systems.

  • Collaborative Mindset: Strong interpersonal skills for working across multiple departments including Land Protection the Plans Library and GIS staff.

  • Field Readiness: Interest in and ability to assist with outdoor field data collection and site monitoring visits.

  • Quick learner: Interest in and ability to self-teach techniques from online help manuals and tutorials. Be willing to fail and reach out for help.
