PURPOSE OF POSITION
Manager Travel Media Relations is accountable for planning developing implementing and evaluating Media Relations programs policies and initiatives for Destination British Columbia. The position manages short and long-term media relations campaigns designed to generate unpaid media coverage resulting in a strong consumer awareness of British Columbia as a travel destination thereby increasing tourism visitation and revenue. The position will develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with internal clients regional associations and industry partners; provide expertise and advice to industry partners Destination Marketing Organizations the Destination Canadian and the private sector on strategies to improve their worldwide travel media relations activities.
SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Develops the Travel Media Relations plan for the US and Canada to align with the Global Marketing Strategy creating alignment internally and with partners and stakeholders to reach target goals and outcomes.
- Develops strategic plans to appropriately reflect business and market needs within budgetary and corporate planning initiatives. Develops region and market-specific media relations plans to support marketing campaigns and activities. Ensures integration and coordination of international media relations activities with head office and regional activities.
- Develops evaluates and ensures the effective implementation of media relations strategies to generate awareness of BC in the US and Canada increase visitation and maximize tourism revenue. Ensures new initiatives are supported by business case analysis.
- Develops and maintains cooperative working relationships with regional provincial and national tourism stakeholders to deliver on the travel media plan generate earned media awareness.
- Provides leadership through participation in general and specific DBC development initiatives and in defining and developing future marketing opportunities goals and strategies.
- Oversees multiple aspects of Travel Media Relations for DBC and its industry partners through:
- Travel media relations program development implementation and evaluation;
- Messaging development and management including generation of content images;
- Identification of key accounts including database management;
- Relationship building with key media and key account development;
- Managing the Visiting Journalist Program;
- Leadership of RDMO media relations activities;
- Media monitoring and analysis to share value of working with travel media with BC stakeholders;
- Developing and implementing special projects to support marketing activities;
- Industry program and engagement initiatives.
- Directs and manages the North America Travel Media Relations budget. Evaluates and recommends funding programs alternate funding sources and negotiates and signs off contracts to support travel media relations projects and initiatives. Allocates financial and human resources to ensure the cost-effective delivery of programs.
- Directs a team of regular and contracted staff with responsibility for hiring/promoting/dismissing authorizing overtime and ensuring corrective action where appropriate. Provides mentoring and coaching for staff.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
- University degree or diploma in Marketing or related major or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Minimum 3 years Tourism marketing experience especially though not limited to travel trade marketing and partnerships travel media relations and/or consumer marketing
- Minimum 3 years experience developing and managing staff
- Experience with overseeing and being accountable for managing complex budgets
- Experience developing and managing staff and the responsibility for the allocation of human resources
- Ability and willingness to travel as required
