About The Position
The Technical Officer reports to the Technical Coordinator and delivers high-quality technical support to users of the Chemistry teaching laboratories and associated workspaces with additional support provided to research laboratories as required.
The role contributes to the safe and effective delivery of laboratory classes through the preparation of solutions and materials set-up and pack-down of equipment and consumables routine calibration and first-line troubleshooting of laboratory instruments and general day-to-day laboratory housekeeping.
Under the direction of the Technical Coordinator the incumbent also supports the maintenance of laboratory documentation and systems including chemical registers consumable and equipment inventories SOPs/SWIs and risk documentation while ensuring compliance with RMIT health safety and well-being requirements.
To be successful in this position youll have:
1. Demonstrated experience in Chemistry teaching laboratories including preparation of solutions/reagents class set-up/pack-down and the provision of technical support during practical classes.
2. Demonstrated experience operating and maintaining common Chemistry laboratory equipment including routine checks basic calibration and first-line troubleshooting. Equipment includes balances
pH/conductivity meters UV-Vis spectrometers and rotary evaporators.
3. Demonstrated understanding of laboratory safety and compliance including safe chemical handling and storage gas cylinder safety practices and chemical waste management with awareness of relevant OH&S legislation procedures and risk controls.
4. Strong client-focused communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with a diverse community of staff and students provide clear guidance within scope and contribute positively within cross-functional teams.
5. Proven organisational skills and attention to detail including maintaining records monitoring consumable stock levels and planning/prioritising work to meet teaching schedules and operational requirements across peak and non-teaching periods.
