Department Description
The Legal Services Team at Asylum Access Thailand (AAT) plays a crucial role in providing comprehensive legal support and assistance to refugees in Bangkok and Mae Sot Tak. The primary responsibilities of this team include:
- Ensuring refugees have access to justice and protection: The Legal Services Team works to safeguard the rights and wellbeing of refugees by facilitating their access to legal remedies and safeguards.
- Supporting refugees during the Legal Status processes including Refugee Status Determination (RSD) and National Screening Mechanism (NSM) processes: The program provides essential guidance and support to refugees navigating the complex RSD and NSM procedures helping them navigate the system effectively.
- Informing refugees about the legal status process including but not limited to RSD and NSM: The Legal Services Team is responsible for educating refugees about the processes and their rights and options within this framework.
The Legal Services Team is overseen by the Executive Director and includes the Bangkok team of Legal Status Protection Interpreter and Paralegal Screening and Intake and Volunteer Legal Advocates; and the Mae Sot team of Protection.
Position Description
Under the guidance of the Project Legal Advisor the Case Worker will provide direct legal assistance and protection support to Burmese refugees in Mae Sot while concurrently carrying out administrative logistical and coordination duties associated with the Mae Sot legal protection project. The Case Worker will serve as a project interpreter when needed and will contribute to the projects goal of enhancing legal protection for Burmese refugees through legal empowerment self-protection and the strengthening of paralegal capacity in the community.
Key Responsibilities
Case Work
- Conduct intake interviews to assess clients legal needs eligibility and protection risks.
- Identify clients requiring urgent protection and report to the Project Legal Advisor immediately
- Monitor case progress update case records in the RIPs case management system and prepare case reports for supervisors.
- Maintain strict client confidentiality and adhere to professional standards of case management.
- Collect and organise client documents and prepare paperwork as assigned by the Project Legal Advisor
Project Support
- Support the Project Legal Advisor in the implementation and development of the Mae Sot legal protection project.
- Collaborate and coordinate with network and partner organisations to ensure effective implementation of project activities.
- Assist in providing training and organising legal clinics with community paralegals and support collaboration efforts with other organisations.
- Coordinate logistics and undertake administrative tasks to ensure smooth activity implementation.
- Maintain participant lists and paralegal timesheets; collect documents and prepare paperwork for submission to the finance department.
- Serve as project interpreter for English and Burmese during training clinics and project activities as needed
- Other duties as assigned by the supervisor
Office Administrative Support
- Assist in day-to-day administrative activities for the Mae Sot office ensuring efficient functionality.
- Procure and maintain office supplies equipment and stationery in accordance with AAT procurement policies.
- Maintain office maintenance schedules and coordinate repairs for office facilities and equipment.
- Process office bill payments and expenses.
- Responsible for all other office-related administrative tasks.

The Project Legal Advisor
Minimum Qualifications
- Experience in case management including case intake interviews and case monitoring
- Demonstrated knowledge of migration refugee rights and the local context in Mae Sot.
- Strong coordination and organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines.
- Ability to take initiative and work effectively both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Office Gmail Google Drive and related tools (Docs Sheets Calendar etc.).
- Ability to fluently speak and write in English and Burmese is required; ability to communicate in Thai is a strong asset.
- Experience in administration and coordination on diverse and complex issues.
Preferred Qualifications
- At least 1 year of experience in organizing workshops and legal case management especially case intake interview and case monitoring
- Experienced in working with human rights and refugees issues
Salary and Benefits
The Case Worker will receive a monthly salary of THB 17000 per month.
Hours and Location of Work
The Case Worker is a full-time fixed term contract up to December 2026 based in our office in Mae Sot Thailand working 40 hours a week.Candidates should be aware that travel to Bangkok or other provinces in Thailand is required from time to time and some flexibility regarding working hours is required in order to take off-hour calls and meetings with clients and different networks.
