Were looking for a collaborative and proactive Rights Associate who brings publishing experience strong relationship-building skills and a thoughtful detail-oriented approach to managing multiple this role you will work closely with internal teams agents and international publishers to help our books reach a wider global audience.

Your contribution to the story:

At Penguin Random House Canada our Rights department finds publishers around the world and licenses domestic and foreign rights for titles across Penguin Random House Canadas adult and kids lists.

As part of this team the Rights Associate will support the international reach of our publishing program by building relationships with publishing partners and helping our titles travel into new markets.

Reporting to the Vice President of Subsidiary Rights you will collaborate with colleagues across departments and work closely with literary agents co-agents and international publishing partners. Your work on our team will help our authors and books find a wider international audience.

What youll do:

  • Pitch negotiate and sell rights for titles across Penguin Random House Canadas publishing lists.
  • Collaborate with our colleagues from multiple internal departments including editorial production contracts royalty accounting to support the rights sales process.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with external stakeholders including authors and literary agents while working closely and staying connected with co-agents and scouts to sell great Canadian books to foreign publishing partners.
  • Support with information tracking for submissions and contracts maintain and update databases and materials; review contracts and royalty reports and apply creative and research skills towards submissions to foreign publishers.
  • Manage the end-to-end lifecycle of the Rights deal process guiding projects from submission through negotiation to finalized agreements and a finished foreign edition.
  • Contribute to the teams presence at key industry events and international book fairs such as the London Book Fair Bologna Book Fair Frankfurt Book Fair Salon du Livre de Montreal and other necessary presentations by supporting preparation and where applicable attending.

Experience and knowledge youll bring (qualifications):

  • 3 years of demonstrated experience selling rights in book publishing.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with presentation experience.
  • Solid negotiation skills and business understanding.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize and accurately complete multiple projects and tasks at the same time.
  • Creativity and thorough research skills.
  • A proactive mindset coupled with an ability to work both independently and as part of a larger team.
  • Familiarity with co-editions would be a strong asset.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (particularly Excel) and collaborative digital tools including Teams and similar platforms.
  • An inclusive approach to your work supported by cultural competency and a proven ability to collaborate with people from across a wide range of diverse backgrounds.
  • Enhanced knowledge awareness and experience with the culture and history of any community that has faced marginalization is considered a plus.
  • And of course a love for books!

This role requires a minimum of three-days per week in-office as per our schedule located at our Toronto office at 320 Front Street West. As such candidates need to reside within commuting distance of our office.
