DevOps Engineer - Autonomous Subsea Systems
Location: Bristol UK
Approach: Hybrid Remote typically 2-3 days per week in the office
Contract: Permanent full-time
About Us
We build autonomous systems for subsea robotics and the software platforms that control monitor and analyse them supporting demanding realworld operations where reliability really matters. We are evolving our infrastructure from a hybrid AWS setup to a modern onprem Kubernetes platform and we host a growing number of internal services that support our engineering and operations teams.
About the role
We are looking for a DevOps Engineer to join our DevOps team and work closely with our existing DevOps Engineer and the Global Head of DevOps. This is a juniormid role ideal for someone with a couple of years experience who wants to deepen their skills by helping to own and evolve a real Kubernetes platform and developer experience.
You will act as key support and backup for the current DevOps Engineer including covering when they are on leave and you will gradually take ownership of parts of the platform as your experience grows. From time to time you may accompany developers for wettesting trials of ROVs and software getting handson exposure to how our autonomous systems are used in the field.
What you can expect
Help own operate and evolve our Kubernetesbased platform (onprem with some legacy AWS).
Build maintain and improve CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions.
Implement and maintain infrastructure as code using Terraform Helm Ansible and GitOps with ArgoCD.
Improve observability using Prometheus OpenTelemetry Loki and Grafana (metrics logs traces SLOs).
Work closely with product and software teams to improve developer experience (tooling pipelines environments documentation).
Contribute to reliability work including incident response postincident reviews and capacity considerations (no formal oncall rota today).
Help drive continuous improvement as we migrate more workloads to onprem Kubernetes and refine our platform.
Occasionally support wettesting trials of ROVs and software alongside developers ensuring our platform and tooling work smoothly in realistic conditions.
Our tech stack
You dont need to know everything on day one but you should be keen to learn and comfortable working close to this stack:
Infrastructure: Legacy AWS moving towards onprem infrastructure.
Orchestration: Kubernetes (core platform youll work on).
IaC & automation: Terraform Helm Ansible ArgoCD (GitOps).
CI/CD: GitHub Actions.
Observability: Prometheus OpenTelemetry Loki Grafana.
Languages: Python and C in our products; scripting/automation typically in Python Go or shell (we dont build full applications in Go but use it where its a good fit for tooling).
Hardware: NVIDIA GPUbased systems; experience with NVIDIA tooling or GPU workloads is a strong plus.
What you bring
You have roughly 24 years of experience in a DevOps Platform Infrastructure or similar role or equivalent practical experience.
You have a solid understanding of Linux and containers and some handson experience with Kubernetes or strong Kubernetes fundamentals and a clear desire to deepen them.
You have practical experience with at least some of: Terraform Helm Ansible ArgoCD or similar IaC/automation tooling.
You are familiar with CI/CD concepts and have used at least one CI system in production (GitHub Actions is a plus).
You can write scripts or small tools in Python Go or shell to automate repetitive work and glue systems together.
You care about reliability automation and developer experience and you enjoy collaborating with software engineers.
You are comfortable working in a hybrid environment with a mix of cloud and onprem systems and commuting to Bristol at least 2 days per week.
You are open to occasionally supporting wettesting trials of ROVs and software as part of understanding how our systems are used.
Desirable Skills:
Experience running Kubernetes in production or managing clusters beyond local development.
Experience with GitOps tools such as ArgoCD.
Experience with observability stacks (Prometheus Loki Grafana OpenTelemetry).
Experience with NVIDIA GPUs CUDA or GPUaccelerated workloads.
Exposure to robotics embedded systems or other hardwareadjacent environments.
