TITLE: SCHOOL NURSE PRELIMINARY DRAFT

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Valid Arizona Drivers License.
- Possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Arizona Identity Verified Prints (IVP) Fingerprint Clearance Card within forty-five (45) days of employment.
- Must hold a current Arizona Board of Nursing (AZBN) license in good standing.
- A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is preferred.
- One year of work experience as a Nurse Health Aide Nurses Aide or EMT in an educational environment is required.
- Current certificates showing completion of (or currently enrolled in) basic training in First Aid and CPR for adult and child from either American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
- Current certificates in Sensory Screening (audiology and vision) from the Arizona Department of Health Services or currently enrolled in.
JOB GOALS:
The School Nurse will perform all health related duties at the assigned site and will assist at other District sites as needed.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following tasks are essential for this position. This list is not inclusive of all responsibilities. Individuals may not perform all of these tasks or may perform similar related tasks not listed.
- Complies with all HIPAA and FERPA related confidentiality requirements.
- Develops positive relations with students parents school staff and the public.
- Implements a school health services program. Utilizes established nursing processes to assess analyze plan implement record and evaluate all nursing care.
- Carries out school health and safety education activities.
- Assists other school personnel to establish safe and sanitary conditions in the schools.
- Provides high quality school nursing/health services.
- Carries out administrative duties related to the school health program and to the further development of school nursing as a profession.
- Assists in the assessment and evaluation of current health and safety needs of students and personnel and the effectiveness of the school health program in meeting those needs.
- Administers first aide to injured students and provides short-term care to enhance the comfort and safety of injured or ill students and faculty.
- May administer and keep record of any prescribed medications within District policy and school procedures.
- Takes and records vital signs.
- Administers vision hearing dental and other screenings as directed and required by the Arizona Department of Health Services. Submits all mandated screening data to the Arizona Department of Health Services.
- Provides immunization record keeping and submits Arizona state required Immunization Data Reports (IDR) to the Arizona Department of Health Services.
- Writes accident reports and performs follow up evaluations.
- Facilitates sending ill or injured students home or to appropriate resources.
- Cleans up body fluids in a safe and timely manner in accordance with approved Bloodborne Pathogens safety standards.
- Maintains medication logs and daily activity logs.
- May make home visits to educate or advise parents.
- May accompany children to a hospital facility.
- Collaborates with School Administrators and Counselors in assessing and improving the social and emotional climate of school classrooms and specific students when appropriate.
- Intervenes appropriately for individuals and populations at risk for preventable potential health problems.
- Screens and evaluates students for deficits in vision hearing dental at least annually.
- Collaborates with agencies within and outside of the community to ensure continuity of service and care.
- Participates as a member of the assessment committee for special education programs whenever required.
- Communicates effectively with students teachers and parents.
- Assists in training of peers at additional district elementary schools.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE SKILL AND ABILITY:
Knowledge of:
- Working with children and/or school health programs.
- State laws and regulations regarding children and reporting requirements involving abuse.
- State vision and hearing testing requirements for schools.
- Federal and state laws rules and regulations governing education as applicable.
Skill and Ability to:
- Deal with multiple students and medical situations simultaneously.
- Maintain organized records and files.
- Communicate effectively with people.
- Written and oral English.
- Basic computer skills.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
- Require vision (which may be corrected) to read small print.
- Require mobility of arms to reach and dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate small objects. Lower body mobility may not be required.
