The Graduate Schools Master of Human-Computer Interaction and Design (MHCID) program has an outstanding opportunity for a Graduate Program Advisor to join their team.

About this Opportunity

Reporting to the Program Manager of the Master of Human-Computer Interaction and Design (MHCID) program the Graduate Program Advisor plays a critical role in the MHCID program by managing co-curricular activities and delivering student services throughout the graduate student lifecycle. This position manages program recruitment guides students through application acceptance and matriculation processes and enables the launch or re-launch of careers as students become MHCID alumni.

MHCID is an interdisciplinary degree program offered by four departments: Computer Science & Engineering Human Centered Design & Engineering the Information School and Division of Design in the School of Art Art History Design. This interdisciplinary approach prepares a new generation of designers engineers and researchers to integrate design thinking and behavioral science in service of a more effective user experience.

Key Responsibilities

Recruiting and Admissions (50%)

  • In collaboration with the Assistant Director of Student Services - implement daytoday management of the admissions processincluding generating reports and monitoring electronic application materials to ensure alignment across UW MyGrad Slate and other applicable admissions systems.
  • Advise prospective students regarding the application process degree requirements transfer and GNM credits and other issues related to admissions and enrollment applicable to the prospective students unique situation.
  • Co-facilitate annual review and update of full admissions process and training of admissions reviewers.
  • Coordinate the preliminary review of all applications to determine if applicants meet the Graduate School and MHCID minimum qualifications.
  • Co-host and help promote information sessions and other virtual events/sessions that support recruitment and enrollment efforts of the MHCID program.
  • Plan and execute activities to engage and maintain admitted students.
  • In collaboration with the Manager of Communications & Outreach execute an annual recruitment campaign including email and event coordination to increase yield of qualified applications.
  • Foster and maintain continued relationships with external organizations and alumni to support the efforts of recruitment.

Advising and Student Support (25%)

  • In collaboration with the Assistant Director of Student Services - advise students on various topics including course planning graduation requirements and career preparation and resolve institutional issues with registration financial aid and other additional roadblocks.
  • Monitor cohort morale emerging student needs represent student perspectives and participate in curricular review and discussion.
  • Support students in developing conflict management strategies group norms and accountability structures to foster healthy team dynamics.
  • Oversee co-curricular programming for the MHCID program which includes implementing events and managing assessment and learning outcomes.
  • Support program communication channels such as Optisign Canvas Cohort Page weekly newsletters and others.

Alumni Support (15%)

  • Support and advise on the MHCID Alumni Council and subcommittees.
  • Develop host and assess alumni-related events activities and sessions in-person and online.

Other Duties (10%)

  • Support MHCID events including orientation graduation DUB and Showcases.
  • Support strategic initiatives that align with this role.

Required Qualifications

Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements such as a license certification and/or registration.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in education counseling business administration or related field
  • At least 3 years of work experience in academic advising for students in higher education and/or recruiting and/or career coaching and job placement

Additional Qualifications

  • Experience working and maintaining confidentiality with individuals of varying ages and diverse backgrounds including underrepresented minorities and/or international students or employees
  • Demonstrated ability to balance student centered responsibilities with program-wide responsibilities
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve difficult challenging or unique situations
  • Demonstrated ability to manage time and workload against external deadlines
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite Google Workspace electronic calendaring Slate or other admissions tools and Insightly or other customer relationship management tools.
  • Excellent verbal written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Strong attention to details

Working Conditions

  • This is a hybrid position requiring at least three days per week at the Seattle UW campus during regular business hours and attendance at occasional evening or weekend events.
  • Extended or non-standard hours may be required based on project or business needs.
