Head Research Support (Scholarly Communication and Data) (Replacement)

The University of Ottawa Library is looking for an innovative motivated and service-oriented individual to fill the position of Head Research Support (Scholarly Communication and Data) (Replacement). The ideal Candidate is a creative and adaptable person who works well with colleagues in a stimulating and changing environment.

Environment: The University of Ottawa is recognized nationally and internationally as one of the countrys top research universities and the largest bilingual (French and English) university in the world. Located on the traditional and unceded territory of the Anishinaabe-Algonquin people in the heart of downtown Ottawa it contributes to the economy culture and quality of life of Canadas Capital.

Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Associate University Librarian (AUL) Research Services the Head Research Support (Scholarly Communication and Data) is responsible for departments managerial and functional activities and is a member of the Library Management Team.

The position manages a team whose scope of activities is broad and includes among other things expert search services teaching and education research consultations and community engagement.

Role:

  • Lead and supervise a team responsible for providing services in support of interdisciplinary research and scholarship in the areas of data services research data management scholarly communication and digital scholarship with the goal of advancing University of Ottawas research and academic mission.

  • Lead and participate in delivering relevant and timely services to support research activities and teaching tailored to meet the needs of the university community.

  • Foster opportunities for collaboration and knowledge exchange especially given the essential role of digital tools and technologies in scholarly activities.

  • Build and maintain relationships within and between divisions.

  • Represent the Library on appropriate internal and external bodies and in key library associations.

  • Together with the Library Leadership Group foster an inclusive accessible environment in the context of a university community that values and promotes principles of equity diversity anti-racism accessibility and inclusion.

In collaboration with the AUL and other heads of research departments the incumbent defines implements and evaluates service offerings. All departments in this division contribute to the work of the Librarys interdepartmental and interdivisional teams to ensure a positive and seamless user experience.

The incumbent is a member of the library management team and is responsible for the following tasks:

  • Contribution to strategic planning processes and implementation of strategic plans.

  • Collaborate with other members of the management team to achieve library goals and coordinate workflows across departments.

  • Develop and recommend creative solutions through policy changes resource allocation and new initiatives.

  • Interpretation and communication of the Librarys directions decisions and impacts as appropriate.

  • Explore new ways to achieve library goals such as challenging existing practices.

Term: This is an opportunity for a new 12-month replacement Librarian appointment beginning on July 1 2026. The appointment may be renewable in accordance with the provisions of the APUO collective agreement.

Note: If librarians currently employed at the University of Ottawa are interested in this position the possibility of an interim appointment would be available.

Salary: Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The expected hiring range for this position would normally be Rank III (salary starting at $102206) or IV (Salary starting at $116221) (As of May 1 2025).

Required skills:

Education: A Masters degree in Library and Information Sciences (MLIS) from an institution that has been accredited by the American Library Association or equivalent.

Professional experience:

  • Effective oral and written communication skills in both French and English.

  • Experience in human resources management and administration.

  • University degree or related experience in one or more of the following areas of expertise: Data-intensive research support scholarly communication or digital scholarship.

  • Knowledge of scholarly information and research methods relating to at least one of the departments areas of expertise.

  • Experience in providing user-centered research and teaching support to at least one of the departments areas of expertise.

  • Ability to establish and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders as well as excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Highly collaborative flexible and collegial with the ability to work in a team environment.

  • Experience planning and implementing innovative projects and services that respond to user needs.

  • Ability to engage empower and motivate with a demonstrated ability to develop and implement effective change management strategies.
