Job Summary:

Vanderbilt Health Executive Search Team is conducting a national search for a Chief Nursing Officer Vanderbilt Psychiatric Hospital.

Accountable to: Vice President Vanderbilt Psychiatric Hospital and Vanderbilt Health System Chief Nursing Officer (SCNO).
The CNO as part of the executive management team for the Hospital and Clinic plan direct manage and evaluate a comprehensive nursing practice program with full responsibility for the leadership and professional development of nursing staff.

Vanderbilt Psychiatric Hospital (VPH) consists of a number of key areas and services including the 106-licensed bed inpatient hospital psychiatric emergency department neuromodulation services and select outpatient services. The inpatient hospital includes 6 acute inpatient units treating child adolescent general adult psychotic disorders mood disorders addiction and geriatric psychiatric patients. The psychiatric emergency department is attached to the hospital building and is known as PAS (Psychiatric Assessment Services). Neuromodulation services include ECT (Electroconvulsive Therapy) and TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation). The outpatient services include Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP). VPH also partners closely with other ambulatory outpatient services and across the VUMC system.

VPH achieved Magnet designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center for the fourth time in 2022. VPH is one of only three stand-alone Magnet-designated psychiatric hospitals in the US and the only in the Southeast. VPH is also the only stand-alone psychiatric hospital that has achieved Magnet designation four times.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop goals and objectives for the department based on interpretation of institutional policy and goals
  • Establish and articulate a philosophy of nursing consistent with the educational research and patient care missions of the Universitys Medical Center.
  • Review establish and revise policies procedures and standards related to all aspects of nursing practice. Interpret policies and objectives to nursing staff patient and community groups.
  • Together with senior medical and administrative staff participate in the establishment of the mission strategic plan budgets resource allocation operational plans and policies for the Hospital and Vanderbilt Clinic.
  • Ensure the most effective operations of the department through program development process improvement and coordination/integration of processes with other departments.
  • Facilitate full integration of Nursing Services with medical and administrative decision making structures of the Medical Center.
  • Conduct studies and establish procedures to study the effectiveness of nursing practice in relation to its objectives and cost.
  • Participate in community health programs.
  • Collaborate with the School of Nursing in relation to curricular issues research and related activities. Serve as an adjunct assistant/associate professor in the Business School.
  • Assist with in-service education as requested.
  • Keep informed of health care matters and their impact on the Hospital through publications seminars workshops etc.
  • Keep the Executive Director informed at all times on status of departments and make recommendations as necessary concerning means of reducing operational costs increasing revenues based on knowledge of market trends operating procedures and reimbursement matters.
  • Represent the Hospital in various meetings and organizations with whom the Hospital maintains membership as directed by the Executive Director.
  • Coordinate and effectively communicate administrative functions with Patient Care Services.
  • Direct the compilation and preparation of information for surveys and reports to Government and private survey agencies.
  • Design implement evaluate and market programs to maximize clinical outcomes functional status patient/customer satisfaction and reimbursement
  • Supervise Associate Director of Patient Care Services and all nursing staff who provide patient care with full responsibility for planning coordinating and controlling the work procedures; analyze and evaluate ongoing department programs to identify areas where adjustments/improvements are needed; provide advice/consultation to others regarding problems.
  • Define and achieve financial targets in support of business goals of the institution
  • Prepare an annual operating budget for Patient Care Services including direct labor material and supplies services equipment maintenance and replacement
  • Present and justify a proposed budget (operating and capital expenditure) to a management review committee
  • Evaluate organizational functions and structures to best determine the allocation and utilization of resources
  • Analyze and evaluate budget variance to determine cause
  • Prepare justification or develop alternatives for cost containment/reduction
  • Project future budgets based upon analysis of current operations.
  • Create and exceed service standards utilizing key service dimension and from knowledge of patient/customer expectations and best practice
  • Participate in establishing service standards for the department
  • Ensure that the service standards established for the department are met or exceeded
  • Utilize customer satisfaction best practices and market information to improve customer service and satisfaction
  • Monitor performance against service stands
  • Use patient/customer satisfaction data to improve systems processes and outcomes
  • Participate in process to determine if service standards are compatible with financial targets
  • Create an organizational culture (both within and across departments) that provides a safe satisfying and enriching environment for employees and provides a qualified competent staff to meet patient needs.
  • Appoint supervise and evaluate senior nursing practice staff (Associate Directors) and others.
  • Establish and maintain cost-effective recruitment and staffing policies and programs for staff nurses and related positions. Assure the selection and hiring process matches the right people with the right work to maximize productivity and quality
  • Provide professional development opportunities for both clinical and administrative nursing staff including training for such things as criteria based job descriptions and performance evaluation methodologies.
  • Provide leadership to promulgate the mission and the values of the institution to the department
  • Model behavior consistent with the mission vision and values of the enterprise through leading coordinating projects innovation initiating improvement and developing new programs
  • Demonstrate a leadership style that is facilitative and collaborative
  • Communicate within and across departments to maximize effectiveness efficiently and information sharing
  • Ensures all Human Resource and VUMC policies and procedures are followed according to standards.
  • Define the qualifications and performance expectations for all staff positions through the Performance Development system including department specific job descriptions measurable performance standards
  • Create an environment that encourages and supports self-development and learning for all staff through regular feedback by assuring the development of staff through orientation training programs work experiences and assessing competencies by meeting the performance expectations stated in his or her job description in a timely manner (normally annually)
  • Identify establish and evaluate quality assurance standards programs and procedures within department
  • Establish and evaluate standards of performance for nursing to ensure safe effective and efficient nursing care. Overall responsibility for nursing quality assurance standards programs and procedures.
  • Responsible for coordinating and ensuring compliance with all State/Federal and JCAHO surveys and inspections.

Qualifications:

  • Tennessee Registered Nurse License.
  • Masters Degree in Nursing Doctorate preferred.
  • A minimum of 10 years administrative experience with increasing scope of responsibility in a Behavioral Health/Psychiatric or academic health care setting.
