Responsibilities
Position Summary: The Human Resources Generalist provides day to day support in all aspects of human resources and labour relations. This position is responsible for executing programs policies and procedures in compliance with both provincial and federal regulations and corporate and client policies. The Human Resources Generalist is also responsible for administering the Companys extended health medical dental pension programs and Human Resources systems.
Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities: The following is not intended to be a comprehensive list of the essential functions of the Human Resources Generalist position but rather a general description of some of the requirements necessary to carry out the duties and responsibilities of this position. The Human Resources Generalist must be able to perform the following tasks among others:
- Assists the operations in labour relations activities including collective bargaining grievance handling arbitrations mediations and union avoidance strategies
- Resides as the local expert in human resources employment law and labour relations issues
- Participates in and advises management regarding labour relations and human resources strategies and relationships including administration of the Collective Agreement
- Executes recruitment programs to support operational staffing needs
- Manages the external recruitment process and coordinates with management with the recruitment and selection of new employees
- Assists in the execution of employee engagement activities which include the administration of the Companys Employee Engagement Survey
- Assists in the Development human resources and labour relations policies procedures and manuals as needed
- Designs leads and facilitates front line manager training on human resources related matters
- Supports the HR team with organizing and conducting employee health & wellness events
- Responds to all employee benefits related inquiries and requests regarding coverage and eligibility
- Manages the enrolment changes and termination of all employee extended health & dental coverage and pension plans including updating third party systems
- Reconciles all insurer and third-party billing and invoices performs audits for accuracy and sends to AP for timely payment
- Develops and distributes communication material to promote benefit plans
- Maintains and updates employee data and information in the Companys Human Resources Information System (HRIS)
- Coordinates with the Payroll department to ensure all employee changes are accurately reflected on the payroll
- Assist in non-occupational claims management including coordinating employee and employer reporting for claims maintaining regular contact with employees during absences and liaising with operations and insurers
- Coordinates and attends onsite Return to Work meetings
- Manages and oversees all workplace accommodation requests
- Assists the management team with strategies and programs to address absenteeism and attendance issues
- Conducts internal investigations
- Oversees all compensation activities including annual merit increase process bonus plans and benchmarking
- Consults with management on organizational design matters to ensure organization structure and positions support business objectives
- Oversees the Companys performance management programs including annual performance review process employee coaching and progressive discipline programs
- Consults with management to assist in determining whether to discipline and apply discipline including suspensions and terminations according to company policy and in compliance with collective agreement
- Interprets and advises on employment-related legislation
- Ensures the accuracy confidential and safekeeping of personnel and benefits documents and records
- Develops and distributes HR reports that improve management decision making
- Maintains a safe work area and a focus on safety to reduce the opportunity for injury to self or other employees
- Attends training courses and refresher courses as required
- All other duties as assigned
Working Conditions: The Human Resources Generalist works primarily in an office environment. The Human Resources Generalist may be called upon after hours from time-to-time by managers in an emergency or other reasons as required. The job requires the following physical activities: sitting standing walking pushing pulling loading and unloading typing filing answering phones.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
- Minimum of three (3) years experience in a human resources role preferably in a unionized setting
- Bachelors Degree or equivalent knowledge in human resources and labour relations
- Experience with or familiarity with Human Resources Information and Payroll Systems (in particular ADP)
- Experience with benefits administration
- CHRP (Certified Human Resources Professional) Designation preferred
- Highly proficient in Microsoft Office software applications with expertise in Word Excel Power Point and Outlook
- Be able to pass and maintain a clear Criminal Background Check
Knowledge Skills & Abilities:
- Excellent communication and presentation skills with an ability to influence people at all levels of the
- Knowledge of all applicable provincial and federal laws and regulations
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Highly organized with the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously while exceeding established goals and objectives
- Analytical with a strong attention to detail
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to set clear expectations coach develop and motivate staff
- Knowledge of best in class human resources and labour relations programs
- Ability to maintain the highest levels of confidentiality
- Ability to hold the respect and confidence of all employees
- Ability to work independently and objectively
- Ability to effectively delegate tasks and provide appropriate supervision and follow up to department staff
- Proficient in Microsoft Office software
- Demonstrated ability to manage with a Safety First attitude
