About the McNair Scholars Program:

The University of Florida McNair Scholars Program prepares eligible undergraduate students for entrance into Ph.D. programs across all fields of study. This national federally funded TRIO program aims to increase the number of students from first-generation and low-income backgrounds who pursue research-based doctoral degrees and careers that require a Ph.D. The program prepares participants for doctoral study through engagement in research and other scholarly activities mentoring academic coaching targeted training and peer support.

Position Summary:

UF McNair seeks a highly motivated professional to serve as Assistant Director. Reporting to the Director of Prestigious Awards and the McNair Scholars Program the Assistant Director supports the administration and day-to-day operations of the McNair program to advance student success and preparation for graduate study. The Assistant Director collaborates with faculty staff and campus partners to implement initiatives that advance the programs mission. This role also provides individualized academic coaching to McNair Scholars to support their successful completion of undergraduate studies and preparation for admission to competitive graduate programs. This is a grant funded time-limited position.

Essential Functions:

  • Collaborate with the McNair Director to plan implement evaluate and report program activities and services that support the objectives of the McNair Scholars Program
  • Support the day-to-day administration of the program including coordination of program operations and assisting with supervision or guidance of student staff
  • Oversee recruitment selection and enrollment of eligible scholars in accordance with program and federal guidelines
  • Conduct one-on-one meetings with scholars to prepare individual development plans monitor academic progress and ensure completion of program milestones
  • Provide holistic advising and support for scholars to promote their academic professional and personal development referring them to appropriate resources as needed
  • Facilitate workshops and contribute to instruction for the McNair course Intro to Research Writing and Graduate Studies for McNair Scholars
  • Guide scholars in preparing competitive graduate school applications including the development of professional portfolios and providing feedback on application materials
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with faculty administrators campus partners and external stakeholders to support program goals and student success
  • Foster a positive welcoming environment that supports the success and sense of belonging of McNair Scholars
  • Maintain professional knowledge of best practices in student success undergraduate research and graduate school preparation through participation in training professional development and conferences
Expected Salary:

Commensurate with education and experience.

Required Qualifications:

Masters degree in an appropriate area and two years of relevant experience; or a bachelors degree in an appropriate area and four years of relevant experience.

Preferred:
  • Prior experience with McNair or other TRIO programs
  • PhD or EdD preferred
  • At least two years of professional experience in higher education including experience developing student programs advising or coaching students or supporting academic success initiatives
  • Experience working with first-generation or low-income students in higher education settings
  • Knowledge of graduate education pathways including the graduate admissions process and graduate funding opportunities
  • Familiarity with undergraduate research programs or experience supporting students engaged in research
  • Experience designing and facilitating workshops trainings or courses for students
  • Strong leadership organizational collaboration and problem-solving skills with the ability to take initiative and manage program responsibilities with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and coordinate complex programs in an evolving higher education environment
  • Excellent oral and written communication and strong interpersonal skills including the ability to work effectively with students faculty administrators and program partners
  • Strong computer skills including the ability to learn and use student information systems and databases
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends to support student programming and events
  • Ability to travel periodically for graduate school visits professional conferences and trainings
