The right candidate will be able to take aset of plans and CAD files reverse engineer them and produce accurate quantities such as:- Total linear feet of pipe
- Total curb & gutter footage
- Cubic yards of dirt/earthwork
This role is ideal for someone coming from an engineering firm surveying company or construction background who already has practical CAD experience and wants a long-term career path in estimating. With steady performance this position will grow into a full Estimator role within 68 years. Depending on their technical background the title Junior Engineer could also apply.Ideal Candidates:- Surveying Companies: Survey techs or CAD operators who perform plan work and takeoffs but may be looking for a career with more growth potential.
- Engineering Firms: Junior engineers CAD designers or civil technicians with practical CAD and plan-reading experience.
- Construction Firms: CAD specialists or junior estimator assistants who are ready to step into a structured career path.
Key Responsibilities:
- CAD Software Expertise: Proficient with tools such as AutoCAD Civil 3D Trimble Business Center MicroStation and Agtek (earthwork takeoffs).
- Plan Analysis: Ability to review plans and CAD files interpret grading drainage and site layout and extract quantities.
- Quantity Takeoffs: Accurately calculate materials including pipe curb & gutter and earthwork.
- Problem Solving: Apply analytical skills to ensure calculations are precise and align with industry standards.
- Support Role: Assist senior estimators with bid document preparation design clarifications and cost estimate development.
- Learning & Growth: Commit to developing advanced estimating skills over time eventually taking ownership of estimates.
Position Requirements:- Formal degree is not required. Candidates may have a technical degree certification or simply proven hands-on CAD and takeoff experience.
- Must demonstrate the ability to produce accurate usable takeoff data with minimal oversight.
- Strong math and measurement skills attention to detail and ability to work within deadlines.
Education & Experience
- 13 years of professional CAD experience in an engineering surveying or construction firm (not classroom-only).
- Prior work involving plan reading material takeoffs or site layout interpretation.
- Exposure to cost estimation or project planning is a plus.
- Experience with surveying tools or software (e.g. Trimble Leica) is beneficial especially from surveying companies.
