Position Summary

The Environmental Inspector 2 (EI2) builds on the foundational responsibilities of an Environmental Inspector 1 by taking on increased oversight project management and client-facing addition to conducting field inspections and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations the EI2 performs quality control of deliverables participates in preconstruction meetings and serves as a field manager on complex projects. This role also supports business development efforts and pursues advanced certifications (e.g. CESSWI).

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Field Inspections & Compliance Monitoring

  • Conduct all EI1level inspections (e.g. weekly rain/rational urban inspections restoration inspections HDD monitoring) with minimal supervision.

  • Lead full-time monitoring of complex stream and wetland crossing projects ensuring adherence to permit requirements and Best Management Practices (BMPs).

  • Oversee subcontractor or EI1 staff performance in the field; provide real-time coaching guidance and instruction.

  • Perform wetland/stream open cut planning including flagging boundaries verifying hydrologic conditions and coordinating with construction crews.

  • Attend site pre-construction meetings to review project scopes identify compliance risks and communicate protocols to construction teams.

Quality Control & Document Review

  • Review completed EI1 inspection reports SWPPPs GCPs and related compliance documentation for accuracy completeness and adherence to client specifications.

  • Verify consistency between field data photographic evidence and deliverables submitted to clients or regulatory agencies.

  • Collaborate with project managers to revise technical documents (e.g. erosion control plans monitoring logs) as necessary.

  • Ensure all EI1 work products meet internal quality standards before submission to clients or regulatory authorities.

Data Collection Analysis & Reporting

  • Perform advanced data collection using specialized monitoring equipment (e.g. turbidity meters flow meters) and analyze results to detect potential non-compliance trends.

  • Summarize field data in comprehensive reports; include recommendations for corrective actions or design modifications.

  • Prepare periodic progress reports for senior leadership and clients highlighting key findings project status and potential liabilities.

  • Assist in the preparation of environmental impact assessments and technical memoranda leveraging EI1 data outputs.


Project Management & Client Interaction

  • Serve as Field Manager on moderately complex projects: coordinate daily field assignments track deliverables and ensure projects remain on schedule and within scope.

  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with clients (public agencies developers contractors) act as primary point of contact for routine project inquiries.

  • Assist operations team in business development tasks including preparing scopeofwork outlines cost estimates and resource plans for potential client engagements.

  • Collaborate with project managers to integrate environmental inspection activities into overall project schedules and budgets.

Regulatory Compliance & Technical Guidance

  • Interpret federal state and local environmental regulations (e.g. Ohio EPA Construction General Permit OHC00006) and communicate requirements to EI1 team members.

  • Provide technical guidance on compliance best practices for complex sites; recommend design adjustments to prevent permit violations.

  • Liaise with regulatory agency representatives during inspections or site meetings to address noncompliance issues promptly.

  • Mentor EI1 staff in understanding permit language BMP implementation and documentation protocols.

Training Mentorship & Certification

  • Continue to support hands-on training for EI1 personnel including ride-alongs field demonstrations and feedback sessions.

  • Track EI1 progress against training checklists; identify gaps and schedule remedial coaching.

  • Prepare for and successfully obtain the Certified Erosion Sediment and Storm Water Inspector (CESSWI) credential.

  • Contribute to the development and delivery of internal training materials job aids and standard operating procedures for inspection activities.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: Associates degree in environmental science natural resources or related field

  • Experience: 12 years environmental inspection and field work

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelors degree in environmental science natural resources or related field

  • Experience: 2-4 years environmental inspection or fieldwork and/or strong document QA/QC project oversight wetland/stream experience pursuit of CESSWI certification

Work Environment

We enjoy and appreciate collaboration as a team and expect great communication but all work very independently in the field as an inspector with minimal supervision. We are on the road a lot (day travel only you will be home each evening unless out-of-town work is scheduled for a project) outdoors in varying types of weather city/residential neighborhoods and sometimes in remote and challenging locations. This position is a remote hybrid role meaning employees will work remotely from the field or home but may be required to come into the Stow Ohio office to retrieve/return their company vehicle each day or on an as needed basis for training and report collaboration in the office.

Standard office equipment will be provided to work in the office.

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position for long periods of time

  • Repeat motions that may include the wrist hands and/or fingers

  • Light work that includes moving objects up to 20 lbs.

  • Working outdoors in all kinds of weather.

  • Walking for periods of time including maneuvering uneven uphill and downhill terrain

Travel Requirements:

  • % of out-of-town travel time: 5-10%
