TRANSITIONAL HOUSING OUTREACH WORKER

SUMMARY:

The Transitional Housing Outreach Workers primary responsibility is to support urban Indigenous individuals experiencing homelessness or at risk of insecure housing by providing responsive participant-based and one-to-one services. The Worker will support individuals in identifying accessing and navigating adult service systems relevant to their housing needs. This position will use a strengths-based trauma-informed approach and will collaborate with members of an interdisciplinary team to coordinate services and support in consultation with individuals and partnering programs.

QUALIFICATIONS

1. Post-secondary education in Social Services or Child & Youth Services or combination of the equivalent education and/or a minimum of two years of work experience with young adults.
2. Minimum 2 years of experience preferably in residential housing outreach or shelter setting.
3. Knowledge of Indigenous culture and history with particular emphasis on family violence child welfare impacts of trauma Indigenous youth engagement and community outreach; knowledge of an Indigenous language(s) will be considered an asset.
4. Knowledge of issues related to homelessness insecure housing and barriers to accessing shelter.
5. Proven ability to deal effectively with crisis situations and to identify assess and intervene with youth in crisis.
6. Knowledge of Indigenous service engagement and community outreach tools.
7. Knowledge and understanding of flexible diverse traditional and nontraditional support advocacy and intervention processes.
8. Ability to engage people to build trust and rapport; effective verbal/listening communication skills.
9. Proficiency in Microsoft Office including database applications.
10. Excellent case / file management skills stress and time management skills; ability to meet deadlines.
11. Group facilitation team building and decision-making skills; ability to take initiative.
12. Ability to work flexible hours including shift work evenings and weekends and on-call for emergency response.
13. Valid First Aid / CPR Certificate and Safe Food Handling certification is an asset.
14. A clear Vulnerable Sector Clearance Check is a condition of employment.
15. Must have a valid drivers license and reliable transportation; will require a valid Drivers Abstract upon hiring.
