Job Summary

The Community Health and Social Medicine (CHASM) Care Worker program is a new innovative advanced certification program designed to address critical educational gaps for Community Health Workers (CHWs) in Ontario. This program focuses on building core CHW skills at the interface between community and hospital systems empowering CHWs with the knowledge and practical tools to thrive in diverse care environments and promote health equity.

Position Summary:

The Associate Professor for the Community Health and Social Medicine (CHASM) program will play a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of Community Health Workers. Reporting to the Head Centre for Community Health Education the successful candidate will be responsible for preparing and delivering engaging high-quality instruction for the Indigenous Health and Wellbeing Course within the CHASM curriculum. This role requires a commitment to student success curriculum excellence and the advancement of the Community Health Worker profession.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepares teaches and facilitates assigned course within the CHASM program ensuring alignment with Micheners academic policies and program learning objectives.
  • Delivers instruction for Indigenous Health and Wellbeing Course.
  • Develops and updates course materials case studies and assessments that reflect current best practices in community health and social medicine.
  • Evaluates student progress and achievement providing timely constructive and comprehensive feedback.
  • Provides student advisement and remedial assistance as needed fostering a supportive learning environment.
  • Challenges student thought processes fosters collaboration and develops critical and rational thinking skills.
  • Actively participates in all aspects of course and program assessment evaluation and continuous quality improvement.
  • Fosters knowledge building and transfer including practical skills methods and techniques essential for Community Health Worker practice.
  • Maintains identified office hours for student support learning plan development and documentation of student progress.
  • Demonstrates flexibility in improving methods to engage and support students including the integration of innovative pedagogical approaches.
  • Committed to continuous professional development and scholarship activity relevant to community health and social medicine.

Qualifications :

Education & Experience:

  • Masters level education or relevant subject area education/lived experience in Indigenous studies Public Health Community Health Social Work Education is an asset.
  • Lived experience as an Indigenous person and/or extensive experience working with Indigenous communities.
  • Experience teaching facilitating or delivering training related to Indigenous health wellbeing culture or community development is an asset.
  • Professional or community-based experience in Indigenous health services community programs mental health wellness initiatives or land-based activities.
  • Training or experience in trauma-informed practice harm reduction cultural safety or holistic wellness approaches relevant to CHW practice.
  • Experience supporting adult learners and delivering engaging culturally relevant and community-informed learning experiences.

Knowledge Skills & Abilities:

  • Understanding First Nations Inuit and Métis histories cultures languages worldviews and health perspectives in Canada.
  • Strong knowledge of colonial impacts on health social determinants of Indigenous wellbeing and systemic inequities.
  • Familiarity with Indigenous models of health and wellness including holistic land-based community-driven and relational approaches.
  • Understanding of Indigenous community structures and current local health and social service systems particularly in Ontario.
  • Strong communication and interprofessional skills with the ability to build respectful trusting relationships with learners.
  • Commitment to supporting culturally safe CHW practice and fostering an inclusive supportive learning environment.
  • Proficiency with computer applications including MS Office presentation and learning management systems.

Other Requirements:

  • Satisfactory Canadian Police Clearance documents required upon hire.
