Job Summary

CARB-X is the largest externally funded program at Boston University reporting to the Vice President and Provost for Research. CARB-X is a global non-profit partnership dedicated to accelerating antibacterial research and development to tackle the threat of drug-resistant bacteria. The CARB-X portfolio is the worlds most promising early development pipeline of innovative products to prevent diagnose and treat life-threatening bacterial infections. CARB-X is grant-funded and currently supported by multiple government and foundation funders. The CARB-X environment is innovative dynamic energetic and rapidly evolving. The Business Intelligence Architect will oversee the data structures and the complete data processing pipeline between the in-house platforms and SAP and other external data feeds. This is one of two BI Architects within the IT team at CARB-X. The BI Architect serves as a point person for handling data including databases data modeling and data extraction and integration. The BI Architect will oversee data integrity and systems design ensuring the ability to extract and analyze data from a range of financial and programmatic data sources to support business leaders at CARB-X with portfolio reporting and financial reporting including forecasting. The BI Architect will understand the Salesforce platform data structures as well as SAP and other sources of data (e.g. communications conflicts of interest intellectual property) and create and validate uniform information management and reporting capabilities from disparate source systems and disparate data formats.

Essential functions for the position include:

  • Overall management of CARB-X data to elucidate strategic insights:
  • Overall responsibility for the strategic insights of CARB-X data. Respond to the leadership teams needs for business intelligence. Build produce and present reports and dashboards that efficiently and effectively communicate business intelligence to the leadership team and funders.
  • Oversee the complete data processing pipeline to/from all sources:
  • Ensure that there are clearly defined data definitions characteristics and systems platforms to enable extraction and validation to the standards required on a routine (real-time/daily/monthly) basis.
  • Monitor the functionality and performance of data platforms particularly Salesforce and SAP for optimal data management. Identify and resolve problems; design and implement enhancements:
  • Support key users with financial and portfolio monitoring and forecasting.
  • Meet regularly with platform implementation partners to review issues and inform the design of enhancements as needed.
  • Design and program the related data structure tools used for extraction and visualization.
  • Maintain a suite of BI tools to enable efficient and reliable management information and train staff as appropriate:
  • Develop expertise in Tableau cloud for scenario building and forecasting.
  • Assist with staff usage of Tableau features.
  • Support user adoption of Salesforce.
  • Utilize Python scripting to solve various tasks accurately and efficiently.
  • Generate regular reports for monitoring and evaluation KPIs and other required analyses:
  • Responsible for the generation of the KPI dashboard and future iterations.
  • Assist the executive team with other mandated or ad hoc reporting needs.

Required Skills

A bachelors degree is required; however equivalent professional experience in information technology including work involving programming data platforms and reporting solutions may substitute for some or all of the educational requirement. Candidates should demonstrate proficiency in the Python programming language and experience with Tableau or comparable data visualization platforms used for analytics and reporting.
