The opportunity we have available

As a Senior Privacy Officer (EL1) you will have considerable experience working in a privacy area involving engagement with relevant privacy legislative and compliance frameworks as applied to Commonwealth government agencies or State and Territory government agencies. It is expected that you will work closely with the Departments legal advisers and relevant policy areas in ensuring the Department complies with its privacy obligations and develops privacy best practice in its operations.

What will you do

As a Senior Privacy Officer in the Legal & Integrity Division you will:

  • Contribute to the continuous development and improvement of the Departments privacy management framework and its privacy management plan consistent with the Departments statutory obligations including the Departments adoption of a privacy by design approach to policy and project development to help foster privacy best practice and to assist with the Departments compliance with any privacy reforms expected to be introduced in 2024.
  • Undertake or assist with privacy threshold assessments and to facilitate and assist with privacy impact assessments consistent with requirements under the Australian Government Agencies Privacy Code.
  • Identify privacy risks and contribute to the strategic management of those risks.
  • Lead preliminary investigations into potential privacy breaches and confidently provide concise accurate tailored and practical privacy advice to stakeholders.
  • Coordinate the resolution of complaints in relation to potential privacy breaches whether that be in relation to complaints made directly to the Department or to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.
  • Contribute to building privacy awareness across the Department to ensure it meets both its statutory obligations and community expectations in its handling of personal information including the development of training materials and the delivery of training to Department staff.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with key internal and external stakeholders such as the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner and to participate in relevant government networks.
  • Manage lead and mentor staff maintaining a positive working environment. This will involve setting priorities monitoring case-loads and managing resources effectively.
  • Be collaborative while also being independent and self-directed in the way you manage and meet your responsibilities.

Demonstrate an approach that is consistent with both the APS and Departments values and where challenges are viewed as opportunities for departmental learning and continuous improvement.

The successful candidate for this position will be able to demonstrate their capability against the Executive level 1 Work level standards.

  • Be able to lead a small team effectively prioritising and managing competing priorities under pressure and using initiative and judgement to achieve results.
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills including the ability to tailor language to different audiences and a high level of attention to detail;
  • Be able to analyse and distil complex information and quickly identify critical issues to formulate appropriate advice and guidance.
  • Work experience and technical knowledge in the administration of Privacy matters is highly desirable together with the capacity to develop a sound knowledge of portfolio subject matter quickly and a willingness to continuously learn;
  • Take initiative and responsibility for your work; and be responsive to the Departments needs and supervisor feedback;
  • Have a demonstrated ability to build productive relationships with good interpersonal skills and the ability to engage effectively with stakeholders and colleagues including those working remotely; and
  • Always act with high levels of integrity and professionalism in accordance with APS values and ethical standards whilst working in a fast-paced environment be flexible resilient and a team player with a positive and collaborative work style.

Eligibility requirements

Employment with the Department of Infrastructure Transport Regional Development Communications Sport and the Arts is subject to conditions prescribed within the Public Service Act 1999 including:

    • Citizenship: candidates must be an Australian citizen at the time of submitting your application.
    • Health Assessment: The preferred candidate may be required to undergo a medical examination conducted by the departments preferred medical provider.
    • Security Clearance: The successful candidate must be able to obtain and/or maintain a security clearance at Baseline level. You must be willing to disclose all relevant and required information. You must have lived in Australia or have a checkable background for at least the preceding five years for Baseline Vetting clearances.     • Police check: The successful candidate must satisfactory complete an Australian Federal Police criminal history check.
    • Integrity and Performance check: The successful candidate must satisfy the requirements in an Integrity and Performance check which is completed by your most recent employer.
