Summary: Assists the Principal in the efficient operations of the school and works to ensure the safety and welfare of all enrolled students and assigned staff. Provides administrative and instructional leadership to faculty and staff through the development and oversight of assigned educational programs school-related activities and operational services. Ensures a safe and healthy social-emotional learning environment effective educational atmosphere provides discipline as necessary and enforces school policy.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Other duties may be assigned)
- Participates in a distributed leadership model and provides operational leadership by:
- Administering student-related processes that assures attendance achievement growth and development including but not limited to: student evaluation standardized testing conduct and discipline student assignments to classes and the maintenance and transfer of records.
- Supporting professional development programs and curriculum development
- Developing and/or using current data to assess and inform student learning instructional practices identify school resource needs and school improvement initiatives.
- Under the direction of the Principal collaborating with administration at the middle and high school levels to ensure the proper development and implementation of personal learning plans (PLPs).
- Coordinating with the Principal and the Executive Director of Learning to establish teaching schedules and an annual schedule of events including but not limited to: student assessments staff professional development activities and the school calendar.
- Developing and maintaining appropriate assignments for non-teaching duties to educators and support staff.
- Implementing policy and procedure changes as mandated by State and/or Federal regulations and as directed by the Principal
- Updating and publishing staff and student handbooks school-related publications and website content.
- Assisting in the preparation of the school budget; monitoring expenditures in assigned areas to ensure efficacy and a direct link to the educational goals of the district.
- Assisting in interviewing and recommending prospective teachers and staff members for hire.
- Directing and supervising the work of assigned personnel and manages personnel issues and concerns. Assuming responsibility for the operation of the school in the absence of the Principal.
- Responding appropriately to concerns and issues from staff students and families. Assisting in fostering and modeling good interpersonal relations among staff students and families.
- Provides instructional leadership staff supervision evaluation by:
- Maintaining under the leadership of the Principal and in conjunction with the Executive Director of Learning and other school administrators a cohesive PK-12 educational plan consistent with the District Ends policy and the Vermont Agency of Education.
- Coordinating with the Principal to ensure a regular review and revision of school curricula. Leading assigned district-approved building-level improvements of the educational program.
- Coordinating with Guidance staff to ensure accurate completion of school attendance register grade reports and all end of the year reports.
- Actively working with teachers to improve instructional skills and other areas of competence through frequent clinical observation instructional conferencing faculty meetings and other means.
- Assisting in developing performance improvement plans and/or professional non-renewal or dismissal processes in consultation with the Principal.
- Provides student services and support by:
- Interacting with students in a constructive manner and conveying expected behavior. Upholds discipline as necessary according to due process rights of students and in keeping with school behavior management programs.
- Working to maintain good attendance on the part of pupils.
- General Responsibilities
- Assisting in establishing and maintaining favorable relationships with local community groups and individuals to foster understanding and solicit support for overall school objectives and programs.
- Leading district-wide activities in-service programs and committees as appropriate.
- Performing other duties and assuming such other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Superintendent Principal or their designee which will assist them in providing services to the school district.
- Remaining current on educational/school administration issues with which appropriate licensure may be maintained.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Assists with the supervision and evaluation of staff. Responsibilities may include interviewing hiring and training employees; planning assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Is responsible for the overall direction coordination and evaluation of the school when the Principal is absent from the building. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organizations rules policies and applicable laws. Regular attendance in accordance with the established work schedule is required.
Education and/or Experience: Masters Degree in school administration education curriculum or related to elementary education. A minimum 5 years teaching and/or administrative experience preferably at the elementary school level. Knowledge and skills in the areas of program and instructional evaluation is required. Demonstrated experience in leadership planning budgeting and organizational abilities. Knowledge of current research philosophy and practice. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable
Certificates Licenses Registrations: Valid Teaching Certificate in PK-6 or Special Education Administrative endorsement (eligible)
Preferred Skills: Personal computer word processing database internet and spreadsheet skills. Ability to apply knowledge of current education research and theory. Demonstrated success in administrative planning program development utilization and modification of resources is preferred. A demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students staff and the community is essential. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and School Board policies are also required.
