Lake Taylor High School is seeking a dynamic experienced and student-centered Athletic Director to lead our comprehensive interscholastic athletics program. This is a high-impact leadership role responsible for overseeing all aspects of athletic operations from compliance and coaching staff supervision to community engagement and facility management.
The Athletic Director serves as a key liaison among the school principal coaching staff students families and district leadership. The ideal candidate brings a collaborative spirit operational excellence and a genuine commitment to the growth and well-being of student-athletes.
The ideal candidate is an organized and proactive leader with experience in athletic administration or coaching strong communication skills and a commitment to supporting student-athletes both on and off the field.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelors degree required; masters degree preferred
- Experience as a coach athletic director or administrator in athletic or sports management
- Familiarity with rules and regulations of the Virginia High School League (VHSL)
- Current or eligible for Registered Athletic Administrator (RAA) or Certified Athletic Administrator (CAA) certification
- Active membership (or ability to obtain membership) in relevant professional organizations including:
- National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAA)
- Virginia Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (VIAA)
- Eastern Virginia Athletic Directors Association (EVADA)
- Valid Tuberculin (TB) test indicating absence of contagious tuberculosis
Key Responsibilities
Program Leadership & Compliance
- Oversee all interscholastic athletic and extracurricular activities at Booker T. Washington High School ensuring a well-organized and student-centered environment
- Enforce full compliance with policies and regulations set forth by the Norfolk City School Board VHSL Eastern Regional Council Eastern District Council and school administration
- Develop and submit an annual sportsmanship plan to VHSL; represent the school at district regional and state athletic meetings
- Submit quarterly reports to the principal and district athletics office.
- Orient new staff to the athletic program
Coaching Staff Supervision & Development
- Supervise evaluate and support all varsity and junior varsity coaches annually to promote professional growth and program quality
- Manage all supplemental coaching positions including contract administration and oversight of paid and volunteer coaches
- Ensure all coaches maintain current certifications in compliance with district and VHSL requirements
- Conduct regular staff meetings to communicate policies procedures and program updates
- Organize coaching conferences clinics and professional development opportunities
- Require each coach to hold a season-opening parent/guardian meeting covering VHSL rules NCAA requirements insurance and relevant program expectations
Administration & Records Management
- Maintain accurate and comprehensive records including student eligibility lists physical forms insurance documentation rosters equipment inventories coaching certifications and awards
- Schedule and coordinate all athletic events practices and transportation arrangements including buses meals and lodging for away trips
- Coordinate the contracting of game officials and event personnel; oversee all logistical arrangements for home and away contests
- Allocate practice facilities equitably across all sports programs; set and communicate practice time parameters
Financial Management
- Develop manage and monitor the athletic department budget; conduct audits and maintain accurate bookkeeping in accordance with district standards
- Purchase athletic supplies and equipment in compliance with school purchasing policies; no personal-use purchases may be made through school funds
- Establish and maintain a system for awarding monogram medals and athletic recognition
Facilities & Safety
- Conduct regular inspections of athletic facilities to identify and address safety or maintenance needs proactively
- Develop and implement plans for the ongoing maintenance renovation and improvement of athletic facilities
- Ensure facilities are safe clean and properly arranged for all participants and spectators at every event
- Oversee parking coordination for visiting teams and officials; and coordinate facility usage with Norfolk Parks and Recreation
Community Engagement & Promotion
- Actively promote the athletic program through collaboration with booster clubs local media and community partners
- Participate actively in the schools booster club and assist in organizing seasonal sports banquets in partnership with coaches and booster leadership
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
- Strong leadership and organizational skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities
- Ability to collaborate effectively with students staff families and community partners
- Knowledge of effective instructional and coaching practices
- Proficiency in computer applications and administrative record management
- Ability to manage multiple programs and events in a fast-paced environment
Supervision and Reporting:
- The Athletic Director reports to the building principal (or designee) and works in coordination with school administrators and the district senior coordinator.
