Research Technologist (SRI) Advanced Machine Shop Regular Full-time

Sunnybrook Research Institute is the research enterprise of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre a teaching hospital fully affiliated with the University of Toronto. Research spans three Toronto-based campuses eight programs and three scientific platforms. Our main aims are to understand and prevent disease and to develop treatments that enhance and extend life. Each year we conduct about $100 million in research across 500000 square feet including in the worlds first Centre for Research in Image-Guided Therapeutics.

The Physical Sciences Platform is seeking an experienced machinist to manage the Advanced Machine Shop at Sunnybrook Research Institute. The Advanced Machine Shop is a state-of-the-art facility equipped for design fabrication and testing of medical devices. It specializes in the manufacture of magnetic resonance imaging-compatible devices prototypes custom-made parts and catheter-based devices 3-D printing and in 3-D computer-assisted design.

The shop technologist provides mechanical expertise and support to the leading-edge medical research. Responsibilities include design and construction of complex mechanical structures and instruments from a broad range of materials. Must work independently from sketches or working drawings use CAD and CAM programs CNC waterjet and manual machinery and equipment. Training on CNC equipment will be provided. Provides guidance and basic machine shop training for Research students and staff who utilize the manual machine shop tools and equipment. Must also maintain a supply of material fasteners and tooling as required. Must provide cost estimates for and maintain records of time and material costs for individual projects for recovery from appropriate grant accounts.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Maintain neat safe and functional machine shop. This includes the purchase maintenance and repair of the shop equipment and tools and maintaining an inventory of commonly used materials and hardware.
2. Supervise the activities of the students and staff while they work in the machine shop. Provide training in machine shop practice and safety for students and assist them in the completion of their projects as necessary.
3. Work with scientists and staff in the design of complex mechanical research projects.
4. Construct projects as designed using CNC waterjet and manual machine shop equipment.
5. Estimate time and material costs for projects. Submit job estimates for approval. Track actual time material costs and summarize on a quarterly basis for review and cost recovery.
6. Produce rapid prototypes for evaluation and proof of design prior to fabrication of actual components as required.
7. Work long or unusual hours as necessary.
8. Repair miscellaneous mechanical equipment.
9. Some projects or work activity may require heavy lifting.

10. Work effectively with other staff at all levels

11. Estimate and complete jobs for other departments at Sunnybrook along with external customers

Eligibility and Qualifications:

1. Minimum two years post-secondary education in Mechanical Engineering Technology or equivalent.
2. Certified journeyman in a mechanical trade (tool and die make machinist mold maker or alike
3. Minimum seven years experience in machine shop environment which includes a minimum of 2-year experience in CNC machining.
4. Ability to perform 3D CAD design (Knowledge of Mastercam and Solidworks would be an advantage). Computer literacy in Widows and Microsoft Office.
5. Experience in designing and constructing complex projects and prototypes requiring fabrication from CNC machines manual machines Rapid Prototypers or Waterjet cutters and machining of different materials (plastics composites aluminum stainless steel etc.)
6. Ability to work independently set priorities estimate project cost (time and materials) and meet deadlines.
7. Ability to teach mechanical and machine shop safety skills to junior staff and students.
