The
Chief Academic Officer (CAO) provides strategic leadership for all academic programs ensuring high-quality curriculum instruction assessment and professional learning systems that drive strong student outcomes. The CAO partners with school leaders instructional leadership teams and central/district office departments to design implement and continuously improve a coherent academic vision aligned with PHAs mission and values state standards and accountability requirements.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSAcademic Strategy & Vision- Develop and lead the academic vision strategy and multi-year school improvement plans in collaboration with the Head of School.
- Ensure alignment of curriculum instruction assessment and professional learning across schools and grade levels.
- Develop short and long-term plans for the districts teaching and learning program with the Strategic Plan.
- Monitor academic performance data to identify trends prioritize improvement strategies and drive data-informed decision-making.
- Conduct strategic analyses and develop clear quantifiable goals and objectives for culturally responsive educational practices.
- Advise the Head of School and Board on academic performance risks and strategic opportunities.
Curriculum Instruction and Assessment- Oversee the development adoption and implementation of standards-aligned curriculum and instructional resources as well as the curriculum review process.
- Ensure consistent instructional expectations and evidence-based teaching practices across schools.
- Lead the design and implementation of comprehensive assessment systems including interim benchmark and formative assessments.
- Establish systems for monitoring instructional quality and ensuring continuous improvement.
- Oversee the district Summer Learning Program including design curriculum and recruitment.
Leadership Development/Supervision- Directly supervise principals/directors curriculum coordinators/directors including the Director of Multilingual Learners.
- Oversee recruitment selection assignment supervision and evaluation of direct reports key instructional support staff and all summer learning staff.
- Support leadership pipelines and succession planning for instructional leadership roles.
- Collaborate with Instructional Coaches to support the new teacher induction and mentor program.
Professional Development and Support- Oversees the cohered collaborative professional development calendar structure for teachers school administrators and staff to accelerate student achievement across all student groups.
- Design and oversee district-wide professional development that builds educator instructional expertise and leadership capacity.
- Coach instructional leaders to strengthen school leadership effectiveness.
- Identifies supports and monitors training and strategies for addressing gaps in student performance.
- Equity Access and Student Achievement
- Lead initiatives that ensure equitable access to rigorous culturally responsive instruction for all students.
- Partner with the Chief of Student Services and Director of Multilingual Learners to develop aligned practices across curriculum and instruction.
- Monitor student achievement outcomes across demographic groups and lead strategies to address achievement gaps.
- Partner with student support teams to align academic programming with multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS).
Accountability Compliance and Reporting- Ensure academic programs meet federal state and authorizer accountability requirements.
- Oversee academic reporting processes including state testing accountability metrics and school improvement planning.
- Present academic performance updates to Senior leadership and the Board of Trustees.
- Serves as district liaison to external instruction and curriculum-related committees task forces and work groups
Cross-Functional Leadership- Collaborate with operations talent and student services teams to ensure systems support effective teaching and learning.
- Partner with Human Resources on educator hiring performance management systems and instructional leadership staffing strategies.
- Serve as a member of the senior leadership team contributing to organization-wide strategic planning and decision-making.
- Additional responsibilities and tasks requested or assigned by the Board or Head of School

QUALIFICATIONSEducation & Licensure- Masters degree required in educational administration curriculum and instruction or related field.
- Doctorate in Educational Leadership School Administration Curriculum and Instruction or related field preferred.
- Possess a valid Massachusetts DESE Administrator License (Principal/Assistant Principal or Superintendent/Assistant Superintendent) as a condition of employment after the first year.
Experience- Minimum 10 years of instructional leadership experience (principal network/district academic leader or equivalent).
- Minimum of 5 years of instructional leadership at the network/district level or equivalent.
- Demonstrated leadership ability and thorough knowledge of public charter education required.
- Demonstrated success in improving student achievement outcomes across multiple schools or grade bands.
- Experience designing curriculum assessment and professional learning systems.
- At least three years of classroom teaching experience is preferred.
- Successful experience as a school principal is preferred.
Knowledge Skills and Competencies- Deep expertise in standards-aligned curriculum evidence-based instructional practices and assessment design.
- Strong data analysis and strategic planning skills.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and coach senior instructional leaders.
- Commitment to equity-focused academic leadership and inclusive instructional practices.
