A well-established law firm is seeking an experienced Trust & Estates Attorney to join its sophisticated and growing Private Client Services group. This attorney will become part of a collaborative team of more than 30 trust and estates attorneys and paralegals across multiple offices advising high-net-worth individuals families and closely held business owners on complex estate planning and wealth transfer strategies.
This opportunity arises as several senior partners in the group prepare for retirement creating a meaningful opening for an attorney who is interested not only in sophisticated client work but also in helping guide the next phase of the practice.
The Opportunity
This role offers the chance to work with a highly respected team handling complex planning for affluent families and business owners. The incoming attorney will have the opportunity to step into existing client relationships support a smooth transition of matters from retiring partners and potentially play a leadership role within the Trust & Estates group over time.
Key Responsibilities
Design and implement sophisticated estate planning strategies for high-net-worth individuals and families
Advise owners and operators of closely held businesses executives of large companies and professional athletes and entertainers
Develop advanced gift estate and asset protection strategies
Prepare and review federal estate tax returns and gift tax returns
Represent estates trusts and individuals in IRS estate and gift tax audits
Collaborate with colleagues across offices on complex planning matters
Potentially assist with aspects of group management including recruiting policy development forms and precedent creation and practice coordination
Qualifications
10 years of experience in trust and estates law with significant tax planning exposure
Strong background in sophisticated estate planning and wealth transfer strategies
Experience preparing federal estate and gift tax returns
Experience handling or assisting with IRS estate and gift tax audits
Ability to work closely with high-net-worth clients and their advisors
Interest in collaboration and mentorship within a team environment
An LL.M. in Taxation or CPA designation is viewed positively but is not required.
A portable book of business is welcome but not required. The firm anticipates a transition period to ensure continuity of client relationships as senior partners retire.
Location & Work Environment
This role may be based in Milwaukee Madison or Chicago. While the firm values in-person collaborationparticularly during the onboarding periodthere is flexibility to work remotely several days per week once established in the role.
Timing
The firm is seeking to fill this position as soon as possible in order to support the current team and allow ample time for client transition and onboarding.
