About the Role

The Orthopaedic Sarcoma Surgeon will provide care for patients affected by bone and soft tissue tumors both benign and malignant. They will also be involved in the management of bone metastases as well as tumor prostheses that might require revision.

The Orthopaedic Sarcoma Surgeon will work collaboratively with the other members of the Sarcoma Unit the other members of the Orthopaedic Unit as well as members of other surgical and medical Units.

The orthopaedic sarcoma surgeon will be involved in the tumor on call roster and might also be involved in the trauma on call roster

  • Responsible for the services provided in the Unit including inpatient and outpatient services teaching research and quality improvement activities as follows:

  • Attend and participate in the outpatients sessions operating sessions and ward work unless otherwise negotiated with the Unit Head

  • Participate in the introduction and evaluation of new technologies

  • Responsible for teaching undergraduates and postgraduates in the unit as well as be involved in all unit educational activities.

  • Regular attendance at and contribution to Departmental Hospital and Specialty educational meetings and forums

  • Cooperate and liaise with other specialties in planning the delivery of multi-disciplinary treatments

  • Work with surgery waiting list coordinators to maximise theatre usage and achieve hospital targets

  • Participation in approved departmental initiatives/research

  • Active participation in staff development and succession planning

  • Implementing improvement initiatives appropriate to the specialty

  • Participate in Clinical Reviews and encourage review of clinical outcomes

  • Participate in the development of clinical pathways as required by the relevant units


Your Contribution

  • Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery or equivalent

  • Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons or equivalent

  • Full medical registration with AHPRA

  • Completion of annual CME through RACS AOA or equivalent

Other essential requirements

  • Completed Sarcoma Fellowship or equivalent

  • Commitment to the values and health care philosophy of the Sisters of Charity and the St. Vincents Hospital Code of Conduct

  • Excellent skills and competencies as a clinician and good communication skills with patients their families and colleagues

  • Leadership qualities including the ability to set clear individual/unit objectives commensurate with the corporate objectives

  • Commitment to continuous quality improvement

  • Teaching commitment and skills in the areas undergraduate postgraduate and continuing medical education

  • Research commitment and participation in research activities

About Orthopaedic Department

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery provides comprehensive multidisciplinary surgically focused management of patients with muscle bone and joint disease. The Department has long been considered as one of the leaders in academic Orthopaedic and Sarcoma Surgery in Australia and has considerable links with the Bone & Soft Tissue Tumour Service at VCCC. The Department of Orthopaedics is accredited by AOA as a training hospital. The Department is engaged in research of international recognition and is affiliated with the University of Melbourne.
