Job Description

To serve as a civilian employee of the Indiana State Police (ISP) whose primary responsibility is to support the Forensic Services Divisions (FSD) responsibilities in polygraph examinations and associated court presentation of routine and non-routine cases of varied complexity and difficulty under general supervision.

Job Duties

  • Conduct polygraph examinations and interpret results.
  • Acquire and maintain analytical proficiency in polygraph examinations.
  • Communicate findings of examinations to various elements in the criminal justice system including court testimony as an expert witness.
  • Maintain effective communication with the scientific and criminal justice communities and Department personnel.
  • Satisfactory completion of an ISP recognized polygraph examination training/testing program and competency testing.
  • Conduct polygraph examinations for investigative purposes.
  • Conductpolygraphexaminationsforpre-employment purposesofISPand other stategovernment agencies as required.
  • Conduct periodic administrative polygraph examinations as required.
  • Work under the direction of forensic supervisor including the review of records.
  • Maintain the polygraph equipment in good working order.
  • Communicate analytical procedures methodology policies and conclusions to various elements in the criminal justice system including court testimony as an expert witness.
  • Participate in a proficiency testing program.
  • Participate in continuing education and training programs in specialized and general forensic science areas.
  • Maintain records of polygraph examinations in a secure manner and complete reports per Polygraph Procedure Manual and FSD policies.
  • Comply with Standard Operating Procedures Rules Regulations and FSD policies.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Job Qualifications

  • Baccalaureate degree or five years experience as a polygraph examiner having graduated from a polygraph school accredited by the American Polygraph Association.
  • Natural science forensic science and/or criminal justice classes are desired.
  • Must meet one of the following requirements:
    • Two years of full-time experience in a polygraph examiner position; or
    • One year of full-time experience in a polygraph examiner position and documented competency testing approved by ISP;
  • Experience working criminal investigations desired.
  • Must have successfully completed a FSD approved interview/interrogation course.
  • Successful completion of an ISP recognized polygraph examination training program and competency testing.
  • Knowledge of polygraph examination techniques.
  • Knowledge of theory and practical operation of polygraph instrumentation.
  • Ability to perform complex scientific procedures in an unbiased manner following the Polygraph Procedure Manual.
  • Ability to comprehend demonstrate and explain knowledge of theory and practical operation of various polygraph instruments and analytical techniques.
  • Ability to effectively operate various computer systems and software.
  • Ability to operate and maintain laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to adhere to established laboratory safety practices.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to testify as an expert witness in an objective unbiased and professional manner.
  • Must possess a valid drivers license.
  • Ability to travel by aircraft and other vehicles.
  • Ability to attend training at alternate locations for extended periods of time.

The successful candidate must submit to and successfully pass an initial subsequent and periodic security-related Departmental polygraph and psychological examinations.
