ABOUT CHIEF LESCHI SCHOOLS: Formerly known as the Puyallup Tribal School Chief Leschi Schools was founded in 1976 to address the high dropout rate of the youth of the Puyallup tribe. It is the largest of seven tribal schools in the state of Washington and one of approximately 200 tribal schools in the United States. It is also one of the largest tribal schools to be funded by the Bureau of Indian Education.
SUMMARY: TheDeanof Students K-12 supports the school administration in addressing student issues across grades K-12 dealing primarily with student attendance discipline and corrective actions BECCA Bill issues and student supervision before during and after school and at school-sponsored events. This is a 12-month administrative position responsible for districtwide oversight of attendance systems and compliance with compulsory education laws and serves as a key member of the MTSS Leadership Team.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:
  • Maintains order and safety in compliance with compulsory education laws school board policy attendance and discipline regulations and school rules as an agent of the school administration.
  • Processes discipline and corrective action referrals for students up to the level of suspension across grades K-12.
  • Notifies the school administration of all attendance or disciplinary circumstances potentially involving short or long-term suspension or expulsion and makes appropriate recommendations.
  • Ensures that all parties receive due process in all proceedings.
  • Attend administrative meetings and MTSS Leadership Team meetings for organizational and supervisory input.
  • Makes daily reports to principals providing summaries of attendance and discipline violations and problems.
  • Oversees districtwide truancy processes and BECCA law compliance under the direction of the Superintendent.
  • Provides collaboration as necessary with local county state and tribal law enforcement agencies.
  • Serves as liaison between school and Tribal Court as mandated by BECCA Bill attendance laws.
  • Monitors students with excessive unexcused absences and who qualify as truant according to the BECCA Bill requirements and ensures timely intervention and documentation.
  • Participates in and supports the implementation of the districts Multi-Tiered System of Supports including data review intervention planning and coordination of attendance and behavioral supports.
  • Supervises students before during and after school in hallways and on/off school grounds and during lunch.
  • Supports student activity supervision with the athletic director school administration and game managers.
  • Helps provide learning and work environments that are free from all forms of discrimination including all forms of harassment.
  • Assists with the completion of reports and statistics related to attendance and discipline including disciplinary referrals and required state and federal reporting.
  • Assists with monitoring of detention and CHOICE Lab schedules.
  • Assists with compiling and publishing of Student/Parent Handbook.
  • Participates on the emergency preparedness committee.
  • Evaluates and supervises various classified employees.
  • Leads district efforts to increase student attendance and strengthen communication with home.
  • Assists with the organization and processing of various standardized testing requirements.
  • Completes administrative/coaching training as determined by the Superintendent.
  • Perform such other duties and assume such other responsibilities as assigned and needed by the Superintendent.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must hold a current Washington State Teaching Certificate
  • Effective communicator
  • Ability to manage multiple projects/tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to implement positive discipline/attendance procedures across K-12 grade levels
  • Ability to establish positive working relationships with staff students parents and community members.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Washington State Principals Credential or seeking a principals credential
  • Three years successful teaching experience at the elementary or secondary level
  • Experience with student athletics/activities
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with people from a variety of backgrounds and use shared decision- making processes
  • Demonstrated ability to encourage excellence in staff and students
  • Demonstrated leadership ability
  • Training and experience in restorative practices
  • Current First Aid/CPR card
CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to stand or sit or both for long periods of time. The employee must frequently reach with hands and arms and is regularly required to talk or hear; stand and/or walk; bend stoop twist squat and kneel; and use hands to finger handle feel and perform fine motor manipulation. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Anything over the weight limits should be done as a two-person lift or with a mechanical lift.
