Founded in 1953 Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC) located in scenic Upstate NY is a multi-campus College with locations in Troy and Malta New York. HVCC offers more than 80 degree and certificate programs in three schools: Business and Liberal Arts; Health Sciences; and Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM). Public Safety Dispatcher

To be considered an applicant for this position you must meet the minimum qualifications as stated in this announcement. HVCC does not support visa applications. Applicants must be either a U.S. Citizen or U.S. Lawful Permanent Resident of the United States.
RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS: Candidates must have been legal residents of New York State for at least FOUR months immediately preceding the date of the test. Pursuant to subdivision 4a of Sec. 23 of the Civil Service Law preference may be given to successful candidates who have been legal residents of the municipality to which the appointment is to be made for at least FOUR months preceding the date of the written test.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of a New York State high school equivalency diploma. Pass a fingerprint background check medical exam to include a hearing test and a Psychological/Personality assessment in accordance with NYS Title 21 section 5201.2.
Good knowledge of radio dispatching techniques and equipment; good knowledge of computer terminals and telephone switchboards; good knowledge of the geography of the college campus; good knowledge of computer skills with general knowledge of Windows; ability to communicate clearly in writing and orally; ability to use a radio as a communication device; ability to maintain records and reports; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to write legibly; ability to perform calmly and efficiently in emergency situations; ability to deal courteously with the public; good judgment and mental alertness; dependability; good telephone skills; good physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
DUTIES AND/OR RESPONSIBILITIES: Public Safety Dispatchers (HVCC) perform a variety of tasks associated with telephone calls from the public for assistance and dispatching appropriate personnel or equipment as required. The employee in this position may be assigned to work at the information desk in the Public Safety Office. A Public Safety Dispatcher (HVCC) works under the direct supervision of the Director of Public Safety with considerable leeway allowed to exercise independent judgment in an emergency.
Receives emergency and non-emergency calls from the public.
Responsible for emergency and non-emergency telephone and radio
communications for the Public Safety Department.
Record and route incoming telephone and radio calls.
Dispatch campus security and law enforcement personnel by use of radio.
Maintain radio contact with officers on assignments.
Keep Supervisor and officers informed of current situations.
Disseminate information to the public and respond to inquiries.
Maintain a written log or computer system database detailing incidents
investigations and routine activities on the Public Safety Department.
Monitor the status of alarms and doors on the Public Safety control panel and
operate the computer-controlled locking and unlocking of doors on campus.
Responsible for directing people who come to the Public Safety Department for
information to the proper resources.
Provide field personnel information as required.
Train new personnel in the operation of dispatching equipment.
May perform routine maintenance and cleaning of communications equipment
and work areas.
Perform other related duties as required.
