The Associate Director of Student Life reports to and works closely with the Assistant Dean of Student Life who oversees the overall work of the Office of Student Life. Maintains effective working relationships with Candlers deans and faculty; with staff of all Candler offices and the Graduate Division of Religion; and with staff of Emory Universitys International Student and Scholar Services Program and Office of International Student Life.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manages all aspects of the Volunteer Emory (VE) program providing the Emory community with service opportunities that promote learning about self and society while meeting the needs identified by agency partners.
- Provides leadership to University-wide working groups and committees on Community Engagement including extensive collaboration with the Center for Community Partnerships.
- Initiates and manages intentional strategic partnerships within and outside of the Emory community.
- Manages all aspects of a $200000 budget including income and programmatic allocations for community engagement initiatives.
- Provides leadership for a multi-year development and fundraising campaign for Volunteer Emory.
- Supports the integration of community engagement into programs throughout the Office and Division.
- Engages faculty in social justice and community engagement initiatives.
- Supervises a leadership team and student staff of Volunteer Emory as well as professional staff members.
- Expands risk management frameworks and practices throughout the Office of Student Leadership & Service related to both student organizations and community engagement initiatives.
- Advises Emory community members in service project organization tasks and processes.
- Advises service-related student organizations when possible including contract negotiations.
- Conducts annual community engagement assessment projects while supporting the Division of Campus Life in advocating the impact of community engagement on student learning.
- Conduct strategic and long-range planning for OSLS activities.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Student Life:
- Operationalizes comprehensive annual co-curricular programming for the Office of Student Life supporting the professional sociocultural personal and vocational aims of domestic hybrid and international students.
- Oversees administration and operations for all student engagement and community-facing initiatives for the department including program planning data and student tracking departmental evaluation and assessment and program KPIs and benchmarking.
- Designs plans and executes key signature programming including Candlers Fall and Spring New Student Orientation Day of Gratitude Honors Day as well as reoccurring programming aimed at fostering community and strengthening foundational support for all students.
- Directs student initiatives and global resource allocation for international students designed to neutralize academic and cultural barriers to student success and retention; provides oversight and support for international student life activities including hospitality for incoming international students and their families; new international student orientation; international student organizations; coordination with Emory Universitys ISSS Office.
- Nurtures student matriculation retention and academic success through measured coaching advising and mentorship frameworks.
- Oversees international exchange program relations including management of the recruitment and application process for Candler as well as assisting in the preparation and debrief of Candler students for overseas study per requirements of student exchange agreements; develop onboarding frameworks for exchange students from partner institutions per requirements of student exchange agreements.
Office Management:
- Manages daily operations of the OSL while overseeing enforcement of policies and procedures within the administration of the office. This includes maintaining current standard operating procedures properly staffing the suite ordering supplies and coordinating with Candler Events Office for event-related support. Other duties include maintaining secure and organized electronic filing system for OSL programming and budget; and ensuring that digital communication tools and resources are current and accessible.
- Directs departmental marketing and branding activities paying particular attention to their strategic planning and redesign aimed at boosting program awareness and brand equity.
- Oversees all administrative elements in recruitment hiring and evaluation of student staff.
- Supervises a diverse cross-functional team of student leaders dedicated to planning supporting and evaluating departmental initiatives and creating a culture of radical hospitality for the Candler community; other duties include maintaining student staff schedule; making task assignments; overseeing event and project management; and providing leadership development and mentoring.
- Collaborates with Assistant Dean of Students to leverage quality improvements for programs; directly inputs toward continuous improvements and strategic planning.
- Oversees multifaceted projects using project management system to promote efficiency and refers team members to use system for individual projects where applicable.
- Manages the planning coordination and execution of OSL staff meetings with special attention to event planning leadership and training opportunities for student staff.
Budget:
- Maintains OSL programming budget by managing expenditures and the budget planning process and preparing financial reports
- Monitors and prioritizes expenditures; prepares deposits; pays invoices; processes Professional Development Fund reimbursements and honoraria; submits check requests; prepares expense reports; prepares and submits monthly financial reports to Assistant Dean of Students.
- Consults with Candlers chief business officer and senior accountant as needed.
- Consults with and negotiates with Candler Events Office for event support especially catering costs.
- Consults with and advises student Orientation coordinator on Orientation budget
- Monitors student employment budget provided by Dean including projection allocation tabulation and adjustment of hours worked.
Student Support:
- Develops and sustains relationships with cross divisional Emory offices and departments to ensure maximum usage of resources available to students.
- Assists the Director of Career Services in developing and maintaining relationships with alumni current students faculty staff and other interested parties that seek to support vocational discernment and professional development initiatives.
- Participates in regular Student Concerns Committee meetings
- Serves as liaison to Emory University Case Management Student
Intervention Services:
- Serves as liaison to Emory University Counseling and Psychological Services
- Meets with students individually and in groups as needed.
Institutional Support:
- Oversees or assists in developing operational and statistical reports for management and accrediting agencies.
Required Committee Work:
- Serves on International Studies Committee
- Serves as Candler liaison to Emory University International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS).
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- A masters degree in student personnel higher education administration counseling or a related field.
- Three years of experience in the field of student activities. Experience advising student organizations preferred.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with students in theological or religious education; appreciation of the value of study abroad; strategic planner with attention to detail; excellent oral and written presentation skills; experience and aptitude in management and analysis of numerical data; appreciation of the nature of the ordained ministry and the ministry of the laity and familiarity with programs of theological education the mission of Candler School of Theology and the Church.
- Two years teaching student personnel and/or higher education experience.
