The Burlington School District is seeking a High School Assistant Principal for the school year. The Assistant Principal supports the Principal in providing leadership direction and day-to-day management of the schools educational programs and operations guided by the Districts mission vision and strategic priorities.

The Assistant Principal plays a key role in fostering a positive and inclusive school climate that supports student learning and well-being. Responsibilities include supporting the implementation of school policies and procedures promoting positive student behavior and ensuring consistent and fair application of disciplinary practices when necessary.

As a member of the schools administrative leadership team the Assistant Principal helps oversee school programs supervise and evaluate staff and support continuous improvement in teaching and learning. The role also includes coordinating professional learning opportunities facilitating staff meetings and supporting the professional growth of both instructional and non-instructional personnel.

Essential Functions

  • Department Liaison: Provides instructional and operational leadership to support achievement for all students with a focus on several school departments; supervises and monitors the instructional staff and oversees school budget expenditures in assigned departments; works with the principal to develop the curriculum and recommend curricular changes where appropriate; assists in the development of the master schedule with special attention to the departments supervised;
  • Student Management: Relates to students with mutual respect while carrying out a positive and effective discipline policy with assigned grade levels (either 9&11 or 10&12); coordinates the Student Support Team and work with the Dean of Students to build a positive school climate providing behavior interventions in a restorative environment; supports the schools Mental Health Team and Safety Team;
  • School Priorities/Systems: Work with the high school administrative team to implement and support the schools action plan and school systems such as Attendance and Grading
  • Administrative Team: Participates in weekly administrator meetings with the principal and administrative leadership; develops in-service professional development aligned with school and district vision; serves as liaison with student activities programs and events including the schools community service program as needed
  • Communication/Professional Growth: Communicates regularly and effectively with students educational staff parents community members and district staff; maintains a commitment to ongoing growth in self and others supporting and participating in district and site professional growth programs
  • Other: Performs all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Job Requirements:

    • Masters degree in educational administration or related areas.
    • Licensed or eligible for Vermont Educators License.
    • Endorsement as a Principal (91) or eligible for Vermont Provisional endorsement.
    • Eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Required Experience & Knowledge:

    • Administrative School experience.
    • School teaching experience.
    • Experience with School Improvement and Transformation.
    • Experience and knowledge of Restorative Practices.
    • Experience effectively working with culturally and linguistically diverse groups.
    • Training and/or experience with group facilitation and process management.
    • Comprehensive knowledge of the role and duties of a principal position.

      • Strong decision-making analytical and organizational skills.
      • Ability and interest in direct and effective communications.
      • Ability to improve instruction and increase student learning.

      • Planning and organizing abilities.
      • Ability to handle the complications of authority power and dependence with subordinates.
      • Ability to supervise and manage instructional and support staff within existing agreements.
      • Skills in the area of program and performance evaluation.
      • Effective conflict resolution skills (Equity lens necessary).
      • Skilled facilitator and presenter.
      • Strong Interpersonal skills.
      • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable.
