Job Summary

100% - Instructional Material Design and Documentation
  • Design instructional materials for FYW courses.
  • Revise materials in response to feedback from the FYW Summer Projects Committee.
  • Create clear explanatory documents to support adoption and use of the materials by other instructors.
  • Upload all finalized materials documents and explanatory guides to the FYW Canvas site or otherwise ensure they are accessible to all FYW teachers.

  1. Must be a graduate student in the Department of English at KU as indicated in application materials.
  2. Must not be scheduled to teach during the summer or hold any 3G appointment (including Graduate Teaching Assistant Graduate Research Assistant or Graduate Assistant positions) as indicated in the application materials.


Position Overview
The FYW Graduate Student Material Designers will work collaboratively to create refine and document instructional materials that support and advance the goals of the First-Year Writing program. Through this work the designers will help strengthen pedagogical consistency across sections enrich student learning experiences and develop a sustainable collection of teaching resources for both current and future FYW instructors.

During the semester term of the appointment the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).

Employment Conditions
(1) Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.

(2) This is an hourly/non-exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.
