High School Adjustment Counselor (Grades 912)

Position Overview
The High School Adjustment Counselor supports the academic social-emotional and behavioral success of students in grades 912. The Adjustment Counselor works collaboratively with the Counseling Department Special Education Team and school leadership to provide direct counseling services coordinate supports for students with higher levels of need and connect families with outside resources.

This role is central to promoting a school culture where students feel seen heard and supported and where social-emotional growth is integrated with students preparation for college career and life after high school.

Key Responsibilities

Additional responsibilities assigned at Director discretion.

Student Counseling and Support

  • Provide individual and small group counseling to students with IEPs whose plans include counseling or social-emotional support services.
  • Support students experiencing social emotional behavioral or adjustment challenges that may impact academic engagement and school success.
  • Develop & write counseling goals implement goals collect data on progress attend and present at IEP Team meetings.
  • Teach and reinforce skills related to emotional regulation resilience self-advocacy and healthy decision-making.

Collaboration and Consultation

  • Collaborate closely with the Counseling Department special education staff administrators and teachers to support students social-emotional and academic development.
  • Participate in IEP and SST meetings and contribute to the development and monitoring of behavioral and social-emotional supports.
  • Consult regularly with school counselors regarding students requiring higher levels of intervention or wraparound support.

Coordination of Services and Outside Supports

  • Serve as the schools primary contact for outside providers supporting students (therapists behavioral health providers community agencies etc.).
  • Facilitate communication between families school staff and external support services.
  • Assist families in accessing community-based mental health and support resources when appropriate.

Support for Students with Higher-Level Needs

  • Provide targeted support for students with complex social-emotional or behavioral needs.
  • Work with school teams to develop intervention plans and strategies that support student regulation engagement and school success.
  • Support crisis response risk assessment procedures and follow-up support when necessary.

School Community and SEL Integration

  • Support the implementation of school-wide social-emotional learning practices that promote belonging perseverance and responsible decision-making.
  • Help foster a school climate where students feel connected to their community and supported in their personal and academic growth.
  • Contribute to initiatives that support students readiness for postsecondary opportunities including college career and workforce pathways.

Qualifications

  • Masters degree in School Counseling Social Work Mental Health Counseling School Adjustment Counseling or related field.
  • Massachusetts licensure as a School Adjustment Counselor School Social Worker/School Adjustment Counselor or equivalent.
  • Experience working with adolescents in a school setting preferred.
  • Strong collaboration communication and relationship-building skills.
