Guadalupe Centers Charter Schools (GCCS) serves more than 1600 students from PreK12 and is a free open-enrollment public charter school system located in Kansas City Missouri. Over 97% of our students identify as Latinx and many are bilingual or English learners. Summary:
The Music Teacher will cultivate students understanding and appreciation of music; teach foundational music skills; develop students musical creativity and performance abilities; and foster a lifelong love of music. The teacher will guide students in listening performing creating and reading music while supporting a comprehensive music program appropriate for middle and elementary grade levels.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Create a safe positive and engaging classroom environment that supports learning creativity and musical growth.
Teach knowledge and skills in general music including music appreciation basic music theory rhythm vocal and instrumental performance movement composition and related topics utilizing the district-approved curriculum.
Plan and implement developmentally appropriate lessons aligned to grade-level standards organizing class time to maximize active participation and meaningful musical experiences.
Lead classroom music instruction for elementary and middle school students including singing recorder or other beginning instruments (as applicable) percussion movement activities and introductory ensemble experiences.
Direct and manage grade-level performances and programs including school concerts assemblies and community events as appropriate.
Prepare students for performances that showcase learning and build confidence in age-appropriate settings.
Provide differentiated instruction to meet diverse learning needs and support students at varying developmental levels.
Integrate culturally responsive teaching practices that reflect and honor the diverse backgrounds of students.
Participate in professional learning opportunities and maintain current knowledge of best practices in elementary and middle school music education.
Meet professional obligations through efficient work habits and timely completion of required tasks; attend parent meetings and contribute to the development of Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and 504 Plans as needed.
Demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement of professional practice cultural competence and the ability to meet the instructional needs of culturally and linguistically diverse learners.
Manage student behavior to promote a safe respectful and developmentally appropriate learning environment.
Respond to emergencies as needed to ensure immediate student and staff safety.
Participate in curriculum development and related school-wide initiatives.
Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor to support student and program needs.
Required Skills/Abilities:
Proficiency in vocal and general music instruction; instrumental proficiency preferred.
Knowledge of child and adolescent development as it relates to music learning.
Ability to engage young learners through interactive and creative instructional strategies.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to maintain professionalism and tact in high-pressure situations.
Commitment to serving underrepresented and diverse student populations.
Education and Experience:
Bachelors Degree in Music Education or related field.
Missouri State Certification in Music (K12 preferred).
Bilingual ability: English required; Spanish preferred.
Experience working in an urban school setting preferred.
Experience teaching elementary and/or middle school students preferred.
Physical Requirements:
Prolonged periods of standing singing conducting and moving throughout the classroom and school spaces.
Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds (e.g. instruments equipment) as needed.
Must be able to access and navigate all areas of the school performance spaces and off-site event locations.
