Under the general supervision of a licensed and Board-Certified Otolaryngologist the provider will evaluate and treat patients having medical and/or surgical Ear Nose Throat (ENT) conditions and assists in delivering patient oriented Otolaryngology care to the patients of the community. This role is surgically focused. Provider will assist with booking patients for surgery ensure all necessary pre-operative clearance is completed learn indications and work up for common ENT procedures act as primary surgical assistant in the operating room assists with post-operative care and follow up. Provider will also assist with routine history and physical examinations; perform and interprets diagnostic tests and/or procedures as detailed in the department specific scope of practice. Participate in teaching and quality assurance activities with other members of the clinical department. Deliver direct patient care to patients of all ages.
Under the general supervision of an appropriately licensed and Board-Certified Physician:
1. Acts as first assistant in operating room. Assists with same day pre-operative and post-operative patient care documentation requirements. Assists with OR room instrument and material preparation patient preparation and positioning and post-op care assistance.
2. Performs other duties pursuant to clinical responsibility such as arranging follow-up for patients obtaining informed consent from patient for procedures they are credentialed to perform recalling patients for further evaluation and treatment etc. Informs patients of necessary post-discharge instructions as required. Schedules surgical cases and assists with ensuring all pre-operative requirements are appropriately completed. Appropriately documents in patients charts.
3. Performs complete patient histories and physical examinations; orders laboratory tests and imaging studies; performs and/or interprets laboratory and test results; and initiates treatment. May perform routine or emergency procedures including but not limited to fiberoptic laryngoscopy irrigation and suturing of wounds or incisions drainage of abscesses insertion of nasogastric tubes fine needle aspiration anterior nasal packing removal and/or placement of surgical drains etc. Writes appropriately authorized prescriptions including controlled substances. Responds to initial requests for service-specific consultation as per the department scope of practice.
4. Confers with attending physicians residents nursing staff etc. to ensure delivery of optimum quality of patient care. Confers regularly with Supervising Physician and/or other Physician Assistant and co-workers to keep them apprised of clinical developments patient concerns etc. May participate in special projects as assigned. Assists with preparation of monthly QA data for review.
6. Completes and documents participation in continuing medical education required of Physician Assistants to meet requirements for certification including assigned lectures and conferences.
7. Performs related duties as required professionally or at the request of the Supervising Physician Director of Service and/or Supervising Physician Assistant.
