Job Summary

Working under the direction of the Facilities Supervisor the Day Custodian performs a variety of custodial and light maintenance duties to support the daily operation of the school building. The primary purpose of this position is to maintain a clean safe and orderly environment throughout the school day for students staff and visitors. This role includes maintaining cleanliness and responding to custodial needs in real addition to daily building coverage this position is responsible for cleaning the cafeteria during and after lunch periods and supporting school events through room setups breakdowns and rotating weekend event coverage.Essential Duties and Responsibilities Daily Custodial Responsibilities
  • Perform routine cleaning and custodial duties throughout the school building and surrounding areas during the school day.
  • Sweep mop dust and maintain floors stairs classrooms shops hallways assembly areas and offices.
  • Vacuum rugs carpets and entry mats.
  • Clean and sanitize lavatories; restock soap and paper products; ensure restroom cleanliness throughout the day.
  • Empty trash and recycling containers and transport waste to designated collection areas.
  • Clean windows glass doors walls fixtures and high-touch surfaces as needed.
  • Respond to spills and safety concerns promptly to maintain safe walking and working conditions.
  • Identify and report maintenance concerns such as leaks safety hazards broken fixtures or damaged equipment.
Cafeteria Responsibilities (During & After Lunches)
  • Clean and maintain the cafeteria during and after student lunch periods.
  • Wipe and sanitize tables chairs and food-service adjacent surfaces (as appropriate).
  • Sweep and spot-mop floors as needed between lunch periods.
  • Maintain overall cleanliness to ensure a sanitary eating environment for students and staff.
Event Support (Setup & Breakdown)
  • Assist with setup and breakdown for school events meetings and community rentals including moving tables chairs and equipment.
  • Support Facilities Department needs related to daily building use and special activities.
  • Participate in rotating weekend coverage to support events and facility use.
Facility Maintenance Support
  • Wash strip wax and polish floors using powered equipment when necessary.
  • Replace light bulbs and minor hardware when needed; report issues requiring skilled trades support.
  • Check roof/exterior areas (as assigned) and remove debris from entrances and common exterior areas.
  • Assist with snow and ice removal and sanding around doors and on walkways when required.
Summer / Vacation / Deep Cleaning
  • Perform additional specific cleaning duties during school vacations and summer periods including deep cleaning of classrooms lavatories kitchens halls hardwood floors and assembly areas.
Security & Safety Responsibilities
  • Help ensure building security by checking and securing doors and windows when appropriate and as assigned.
  • Check for fire hazards and signs of water damage; report concerns immediately.
Other Duties
  • Perform other custodial or facilities-related duties as assigned by the Facilities Supervisor or Assistant Superintendent of Operations and Facilities.
Qualifications / Job Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Citizenship residency or work visa required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in custodial maintenance or related work preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectivelyverbally and in writingwith administrators faculty staff students and custodial team members.
  • Ability to read understand and follow written instructions work procedures product labels safety data sheets and equipment manuals.
  • Ability to work independently without constant supervision prioritize tasks and complete work efficiently during the school day.
  • Flexibility to adjust assignments shift coverage and hours as needed including rotating weekend event coverage.
  • Willingness to learn and grow within the Facilities Department through training cross-training and professional development.
Equipment Used Typical custodial and facilities equipment including but not limited to:
  • Basic cleaning equipment (spray bottles foggers mops brooms microfiber cloths trash receptacles etc.).
  • Floor care equipment (ride-on or walk-behind auto-scrubbers vacuums buffers) as assigned.
  • Snow removal and sanding equipment as required.
  • District vehicles and related equipment when authorized and necessary.
Physical Demands The employee must be physically able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations including handling custodial tools and materials weighing up to 50 pounds and the ability to climb ladders in excess of 15 feet and use scaffolding when necessary.
  • Assist with lifting and moving heavy objects over 50 pounds (e.g. desks file cabinets furniture and equipment) with assistance as needed.
  • Requires intermittent periods of continuous physical exertion such as walking standing stooping climbing lifting and carrying materialssome of which may be heavy or awkward.
Other
  • Individuals appointed to this position may be required to hold and maintain a valid drivers license to carry out essential functions of the position.
Terms of Employment
  • Full-Time.
  • Monday Friday 8:00 AM 4:00 PM with rotating weekend shifts to cover events and facility use.
  • Eligible for health dental and retirement benefits.
Effective Date of Employment
  • Immediately.

Compensation:
  • Salary for this position is $50000.00 prorated to date of hire.
