JOB SUMMARY:

This position reports to the Director of Nutrition Services and is responsible for all aspects of food service communication and supervision within the kitchen. Within this general framework specific duties will vary.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Prepare and serve food for meal service utilizing safe food handling practices and program procedures.
  • Supervises kitchen staff and general kitchen operation.
  • Instructs operates cleans and maintains kitchen equipment safely.
  • Able to perform all tasks within the kitchen and service area.
  • Monitors food preparation for compliance of standardized recipes.
  • Scales recipes to reflect estimated student participation based on history in department software.
  • Accurately completes production records using department software.
  • Prepares service areas for service.
  • Utilizes department software to accurately manage inventory and ensure appropriate just-in-time food and supply levels.
  • Accurately use various computer systems necessary to complete job duties.
  • Ensures kitchen staff accurately completes records using department software.
  • Ensure that customers are able to move through serving lines with speed and efficiency.
  • Provides training to kitchen staff on customer service and department expectations.
  • Assist in maintaining a safe healthy environment in the cafeteria and kitchen.
  • Actively and creatively markets meal program within their school to increase meal participation and promote benefits associated with school meals.
  • Assists other employees in preparing for meal service and cleaning of kitchen area.
  • Able to put stock away.
  • Able to wash dishes pots and pans and safely operate and clean dishwasher.
  • Assist with other food and nutrition related duties as assigned by the Nutrition Services Director or designate.
  • Makes independent decisions and take appropriate action while following established procedures and guidelines.
  • Coordinates the opening and closing of the kitchen each year.
  • Directs the activities of student workers and substitutes.
  • Ensure safe food handling preparation and cleaning according to HACCP standards program procedures and health department regulations.
  • Understands and carries out oral and written directions.
  • Communicates effectively positively and professionally with administration staff and students in oral and written form.
  • Maintains confidentiality and displays ethical behavior.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must possess a current Washington State Food Worker Card.
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have current Level 1 School Nutrition Association certification within 3 months of employment.
  • Must have completed an 8-hour Food Safety Course within the last 3 years.
  • Must have two years of experience in commercial food service.
  • Able to lead and mentor kitchen staff.
  • Two years of experience managing staff preferred.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply basic child nutrition guidelines and requirements.
  • Must be able to serve food across serving area.
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time on a hard surface.
  • Knowledge of methods and use of cleaning materials and safe work practices.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and application of current technology.
  • Must be able to read write and perform accurate mathematics for keeping records and reports.
  • Must have ability to get along with students co-workers and district staff.
  • Must maintain continuing education requirements to meet USDA regulations.
  • Degree in Culinary Arts or similar preferred.

A person working in this position will exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally while carrying pushing and/or pulling to move objects. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds unaided and may lift over 50 pounds with the assistance of another person and/or a lift assist. While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to stand walk sit; some stooping kneeling and/or crouching; and significant fine finger dexterity. The job is performed under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or ordinary infectious diseases carried by students.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT and Salary:

As outlined by and in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) of theMead Office & SupportProfessionals (PSE)and Policies and Procedures of Mead School District. A typical school year consists of 180 days plus 10 holidaysSeptember through June of each school year. The individual number of days may vary by position as defined within the CBA.

The salary range for the position is:Min $19.36 Max $ 22.47. Salary placement will be at step 1 on the scale for the position unless otherwise noted within the contract. CBAs and Salary Schedules can be reviewed from the Human Resources page of the Mead School District website at policies and Procedures can be accessed online at employee shall accumulate twelve (12) days of sick leave per year. An employee employed less than a full work year shall be entitled to a proportionate part of the sick leave allowance. A maximum of three (3) days of annual leave are provided for all employees based on the employees scheduled employment hours per day to be used for an absence during work hours or to be accumulated for the purpose of cash out.

Employees anticipated to work more than 630 hours per year will be eligible for Benefits through the School Employees Benefits Board (SEBB) Standard benefits include Medical Dental Vision Life Insurance and Long-Term Disability. Positions anticipated to work 70 hours or more per month for at least5 months over a 12-month period are eligible for Retirement through the State Department of Retirement Services.
