ABOUT SPECIALTY PROGRAM GROUP (SPG)

Specialty Program Group is a wholly owned subsidiary of Hub International established in 2015 to acquire and scale best-in-class specialty insurance businesses. SPGs platform spans five core divisions:

  • Digital Insurance: Squaremouth (travel insurance marketplace with 3M customers) Insureon (largest independent digital agency for small business insurance with 400K annual customers) and CM&F Group (healthcare professional liability insurance serving 150K professionals)
  • Wholesale Operations: SPG Wholesale (recently consolidated from Monarch E&S Beacon Hill SWIS Capitol Special Risk and JDM & Associates) providing specialty market access across environmental construction executive & professional lines
  • MGA/Underwriting: Specialty underwriting facilities across entertainment marine workers compensation security transportation and other niche markets
  • Specialty Retail: Focused retail operations serving specific vertical markets
  • Life & Health/Benefits: Brokers Service Marketing Group Strategic Benefit Resources Total Benefit Solutions and related operations

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Vice President SPG Enterprise Technology will lead technology strategy engineering excellence and AI enablement across SPGs diverse business lines with particular focus on unifying and scaling the digital platforms including Squaremouth (travel insurance marketplace) Insureon (small business insurance) and CM&F Group (healthcare professional liability). The successful candidate will partner closely with business leaders across all SPG divisions to drive digital transformation modernize technology infrastructure and position SPG as a technology-first specialty insurance leader.

This role requires a rare combination of deep technical expertise strategic business acumen and the ability to operate effectively in both entrepreneurial and enterprise environments. The SPG CTO will report directly to Hub Internationals Chief Technology Officer and will serve as a key member of the SPG executive leadership team. This position must balance SPGs unique specialty insurance needs with Hub Internationals enterprise technology standards governance frameworks and corporate strategic direction.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Technology Leadership

  • Develop and execute SPGs comprehensive technology strategy in alignment with Hub Internationals overall CTO vision and SPG business objectives
  • Lead the unification and rationalization of technology platforms across SPGs 32 operating companies creating scalable shared services while preserving business unit autonomy where appropriate
  • Drive technology-enabled growth initiatives identifying opportunities for digital transformation automation and operational efficiency improvements
  • Establish technology governance frameworks architectural standards and best practices across all SPG business units
  • Partner with SPG President & CEO and business unit leaders to translate business strategy into technology roadmaps and investment priorities
  • Adopt and implement Hub Internationals enterprise technology standards governance frameworks and architectural patterns across SPG operations ensuring consistency with corporate directives while accommodating specialty business requirements
  • Participate actively in Hub Internationals technology governance bodies leadership forums and strategic planning sessions representing SPGs interests while ensuring alignment with enterprise-wide initiatives
  • Collaborate with Hub Internationals enterprise architecture team to ensure SPG technology decisions align with corporate technology roadmaps security policies and compliance requirements

Digital Platform & Product Engineering

  • Oversee the evolution and scaling of SPGs digital insurance platforms (Squaremouth Insureon CM&F Group) with focus on customer experience conversion optimization and operational efficiency
  • Lead engineering teams in building modern cloud-native applications with emphasis on API-first architecture microservices and scalable infrastructure
  • Drive platform integration strategies across carrier partnerships quote engines policy administration systems and distribution channels
  • Partner with HUBs QA/testing and cloud ops organization to build SPGs standardized QA/testing frameworks and DevOps practices to ensure high-quality reliable software delivery
  • Balance technical debt reduction with feature development making strategic build-vs-buy decisions

AI Strategy & Enablement

  • Lead SPGs AI transformation initiative identifying high-impact use cases across underwriting claims customer service and operational workflows
  • Adopt and implement HUB AI governance frameworks ensuring responsible ethical and compliant deployment of AI technologies
  • Partner with Hub Internationals AI & Automation team to leverage enterprise capabilities while driving SPG-specific innovations
  • Build AI/ML engineering capabilities within SPG establishing centers of excellence for data science machine learning and generative AI applications
  • Demonstrate measurable business impact from AI initiatives through improved underwriting accuracy enhanced customer experiences and operational efficiency gains

Technology Operations & Infrastructure

  • Ensure reliability security and scalability of all SPG technology systems and infrastructure establishing appropriate SLAs and operational metrics
  • Drive cloud migration and optimization strategies leveraging modern cloud platforms for agility and cost efficiency in conjunction with HUB cloud design standards.
  • Establish disaster recovery and business continuity capabilities across all critical systems
  • Optimize technology spending through vendor management license optimization and strategic sourcing

Data & Analytics Strategy

  • Develop enterprise data strategy including data architecture governance quality and analytics capabilities in alignment with HUB standards.
  • Build modern data platforms enabling business intelligence advanced analytics and data-driven decision making
  • Establish data integration frameworks connecting disparate systems across SPGs business units and with Hub International enterprise systems
  • Enable predictive analytics and modeling capabilities for risk assessment pricing optimization and customer insights

Enterprise Technology Alignment & Governance

  • Ensure SPG technology operations comply with all Hub International enterprise standards including technology architecture principles security policies development methodologies and vendor management guidelines
  • Work under the direction of Hub International CTO to implement corporate technology strategies while adapting them appropriately for SPGs specialty insurance business model and unique digital platform requirements
  • Leverage Hub Internationals enterprise capabilities shared services and centers of excellence (AI/automation cybersecurity infrastructure data platforms) while building SPG-specific capabilities where justified by business need
  • Implement Hub Internationals technology governance processes including architecture review boards change advisory boards and investment approval workflows for all significant SPG technology initiatives
  • Maintain technology roadmap alignment with Hub Internationals multi-year strategic plans ensuring SPG investments support and complement corporate initiatives rather than creating redundant or conflicting capabilities
  • Report technology metrics risks and performance indicators through Hub Internationals established reporting frameworks providing visibility into SPG technology operations and demonstrating value delivery
  • Collaborate with other Hub International business unit CTOs and technology leaders to share best practices identify synergies and contribute to enterprise-wide technology evolution

Required Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science or relevant work experience Engineering or related technical field; advanced degree preferred
  • 15 years of progressive technology leadership experience with at least 5 years in senior executive roles (VP Engineering CTO or equivalent)
  • Proven track record leading technology organizations of 50 engineers across multiple locations and business units
  • Experience in insurance financial services or other highly regulated industries strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated success in scaling digital platforms and e-commerce businesses (B2C and/or B2B)

Core Competencies

  • Strategic business acumen with ability to translate business objectives into technology strategies and architectural decisions
  • Deep understanding of modern software development practices methodologies and team structures (Agile DevOps platform teams)
  • Exceptional communication skills with ability to influence and collaborate across organizational boundaries
  • Experience operating in matrixed organizational structures balancing centralized strategy with decentralized execution
  • Understanding of enterprise technology governance including experience working within corporate IT standards architecture review processes and technology investment frameworks
  • Track record of building mentoring and retaining high-performing engineering teams

Technical Competencies

Software Engineering & Architecture

  • Expert knowledge of modern application architecture patterns (microservices event-driven API-first design)
  • Deep experience with cloud platforms (AWS Azure or GCP) and cloud-native development
  • Strong understanding of full-stack development across multiple technology stacks (modern web frameworks backend services databases)
  • Experience with insurance industry systems and standards (policy administration rating engines ACORD forms carrier integrations)

AI & Emerging Technologies

  • Demonstrated expertise in artificial intelligence and machine learning with practical experience deploying AI solutions at scale
  • Understanding of generative AI capabilities limitations and responsible implementation practices
  • Knowledge of modern AI/ML tooling and platforms (LLMs model training and deployment MLOps)
  • Awareness of emerging technologies relevant to insurance (blockchain IoT advanced analytics predictive modeling)

Quality Security & Operations

  • Strong foundation in QA/testing methodologies automation frameworks and continuous integration/deployment practices
  • Deep expertise in cybersecurity risk management and regulatory compliance (SOC 2 GDPR state insurance regulations)
  • Experience with site reliability engineering observability and incident management
  • Knowledge of enterprise IT operations infrastructure management and technology service delivery

Leadership & Collaboration Requirements

  • Serve as a trusted technology advisor to SPG President & CEO and business unit leaders building strong partnerships based on business understanding and delivery excellence
  • Report directly to Hub International CTO operating as a business unit technology leader within the broader Hub technology organization. Balance SPGs unique specialty insurance business needs with Hubs enterprise technology standards governance frameworks and strategic direction
  • Build and lead distributed technology teams across multiple locations establishing strong engineering culture and operational rhythm
  • Work effectively with acquired companies respecting their entrepreneurial culture while driving necessary standardization and integration
  • Develop technology talent through coaching mentorship and career development programs
  • Manage technology budgets and investments with strong financial acumen and ROI focus

Preferred Qualifications

  • Direct experience in specialty insurance MGA/MGU operations or insurance wholesale markets
  • Background in high-growth environments with experience integrating acquisitions and scaling technology post-merger
  • Track record of successful digital marketplace or e-commerce platform leadership
  • Experience implementing enterprise-wide AI initiatives with measurable business outcomes
  • Knowledge of insurance technology vendors and ecosystem (Duck Creek Applied Systems Vertafore Guidewire etc.)
  • Understanding of insurance distribution models carrier relationships and program business structures
  • MBA or relevant graduate degree in technology management business or related field

Location & Travel

This position is based at SPG headquarters in Summit New Jersey or Chicago Illinois (Hub International headquarters) with hybrid work flexibility. The role requires regular travel (approximately 30-40%) to SPG business unit locations across the United States and Canada as well as Hub International corporate locations.
