MISSION
- Ensure the availability performance integrity and security of multiple customers databases within a shared services team.
- Perform daily operations Admin-level support backups/restores as well as changes and optimizations.
CONTEXT
- Shared production team managing databases for several customers (mid-sized companies large enterprises public/private sector).
- 24/7 production environment with strict SLAs and high availability constraints.
- Close collaboration with application systems network security L1/L2 support teams and project managers.
- Typical environments: SQL Server MySQL
MAIN ACTIVITIES
1. Database operations and monitoring
- Ensure proper functioning of database instances (production pre-production test development) for various customers.
- Monitor availability capacity and performance using monitoring and metrics tools.
- Manage database user accounts roles and privileges according to defined security policies.
- Perform routine administration tasks: start/stop instances log checks disk space management preventive maintenance.
2. Incident management and Admin-level support
- Take ownership of Admin-level (L2/L3 DB) incidents raised by monitoring tools or support teams.
- Diagnose and resolve performance issues (slow queries locks contention indexing).
- Handle availability-related incidents (instance crashes corruption replication/cluster issues).
- Communicate clearly and regularly with internal teams and customers about incident status ETA and action plans.
3. Backups restores and business continuity
- Implement control and optimize backup and restore strategies for databases.
- Perform regular restore tests to ensure backup reliability (DR/BCP scenarios).
- Contribute to high availability and disaster recovery setups (clustering replication mirroring AlwaysOn Data Guard etc. depending on technologies).
- Document and improve recovery and failover procedures.
4. Changes and production deployments
- Prepare and execute maintenance operations version upgrades (DB engines patches) migrations and configuration changes.
- Participate in Change Advisory Boards (CAB) providing database expertise.
- Write change documentation: impact analysis implementation plans rollback plans intervention windows.
- Perform sensitive interventions requiring downtime or with service risk often outside business hours (evenings nights weekends).
5. On-call duties and out-of-hours interventions
- Participate in the on-call rotation for major incident management (24/7 depending on schedule).
- Intervene urgently outside normal business hours in case of crisis or critical incidents impacting production databases.
- Ensure availability and quality of service during on-call periods in line with SLAs.
- Log and close on-call tickets document actions taken and solutions implemented.
6. Optimization documentation and continuous improvement
- Analyze performance and propose optimizations (indexing configuration tuning execution plans partitioning archiving).
- Contribute to standardization of configurations and procedures within the shared team.
- Write and maintain technical documentation (customer runbooks procedures operating guides diagrams).
- Enrich the knowledge base with lessons learned and best practices.
- Propose and participate in industrialization and automation actions (scripts jobs tools).
